We use Rough Guides for all our trips, along with Michelin Green Guides. No Michelin available for these countries, though. Rough Guides are the best for young people and those traveling by public transport. We'll have a rental car, but like to go to out-of-the-way sights, which are well covered. Would like a new edition, as Latvia & Lithuania are now using the Euro; this book has prices in the old currencies. I expect a new edition will be printed, just after our trip.

I bought this primary for the maps. I love the way they are presented. Good information here.

Ok

This review is of the latest revision of this book published in 2011. It is bang up to date, for example, in Estonia all prices are shown in Euros which reflects Estonia adopting the Euro shortly before publication. The book adopts the normal format of rough guides, giving the general background and overview of each country, including travel to and around each country, major events and festivals, outdoor activities, accommodation, food and travel essentials comprising topics such as safety, visa requirements, health, insurance etc.We visited Tallinn, capital of Estonia and so had the opportunity to assess the accuracy and usefulness of the information given for that city. Generally the main sights of the Old Town were summarised, though I did think that the information given was somewhat brief and as it is a very interesting area, could have included more to look out for - we saw a number of things we would have liked to know more about which were not mentioned. The listings of hotels and restaurants appeared to be up to date as far as I could assess. Generally, however, we use rough guides to find out what we should be looking at rather than for an assessment of accommodation etc. Tripadvisor and similar resources are fine for the latter, and as this is not a particular lengthy book I would have thought there was scope for the sightseeing aspect to be more comprehensive.Unfortunately we did pick up an inaccuracy in the map of the central area which showed two Cathedrals of St Mary the Virgin which was quite confusing. We eventually worked out that the northern most one was, in fact, the Convent of St Michael which, whilst being very worthy of a visit with a fairly incredible illustrated screen in front of the alter, was not mentioned in the book at all. In the 3rd Edition of this book I would have expected this sort of inaccuracy to have been ironed out unless this is a gremlin which has just crept into the latest version but I am mindful that the budget given to the unfortunate editor to do an update is not generous and hence new editions tend to be titivations of previous versions rather than a proper root and branch job.So a reasonably adequate general guide of the Baltic republics, but if you are visiting a particular area as opposed to travelling about, you may consider investing in a more specific and comprehensive guide to that particular city or area which is what we should have done in advance of our visit to Tallinn.

This guide up to this year was titled The Rough Guide to The Baltic States, which of course was highly offensive and ignorant to the people who live in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Calling these countries Baltic States is pretty much the only time, these extremely friendly people will start to get a bit narky, and understandably so when it refers to their previous terrifying years of being occupied by the Soviets and the torture, genocide and misery associated with that. All of these countries have been independent for at least 10 years now and really don't need to be insulted by that kind of ignorance. When I was there last year and backpackers carrying the old covered books would pull them out to ask for directions while buying lunch or something you just cringed as you could see the insult on the faces of the locals. So at least The Rough Guide has changed the cover (although putting an old brothel scene is probably pretty offensive too). However even with the new brothel cover, you open the book to the first section Basics - Getting There and the first line shows the editors still haven't learnt a thing, with "From the UK and Ireland the most convenient way of getting to the Baltic States is to fly". The fact that they aren't aware of how taboo referring the Baltic Countries as Baltic States is, which is equivalent, well actually a lot worse to calling Canadians Americans, New Zealanders Australians, or Irish people British, does make you question just how many years ago did the writers actually go to these three countries. And therefore, how current and relevant is the information inside. The information inside is a bit more current then the pre Berlin Wall coming down years, there's places to eat, places to stay but like all these sorts of guides, there's a heap more better places than listed inside. If you can't come across any other guide for this region, this book would be helpful in planning your trip and working out just which towns and national parks you want to visit. I would however get a copy of Lonely Planet Estonia Latvia & Lithuania (Multi Country Guide) instead as it does have a bit more information, and even though the latest was published in 2009, I don't really notice much more uptodate stuff in this Rough Guide. The Lonely planet guide also has chapters on Helsinki Finland, which is a short ferry ride from Tallinn, and Kallingrad Russia, which is also an easy day trip from Klaipeda. I didn't go to Kallingrad but found the Helsinki chapters very useful when I went to these countries in 2010.The maps of the towns and cities are pretty much on par with Lonely Planet's. I wouldn't rely on either guidebook for hostel bookings, I'd go to Hostelling International, BUG and Hostelworld and other hostel booking websites to choose, read reviews by previous travellers and book your hostels before arriving. If you're thinking of going to these countries but don't know if you should, definitely do so. The people are some of the best and most friendly locals you will ever meet. There's heaps of great towns to visit in each country but if asked to name two must see destinations in each country my recommendations of the best places are, in Latvia Riga with its great parks, old town and people. As well as the small town of Kuldiga with Latvia's widest waterfall next to a nice relaxing old town.In Estonia you have to see Tallinn, especially it's medieval old town area, where again like Riga, the local people are so friendly. As is the picturesque southern town of Viljandi which is pretty much the only place the trains from Tallinn go. Viljandi has great castle ruins, a nice lake and is again just a really nice relaxing small town. Note you can't catch a train from Riga to Tallinn, you'll be bussing it on Eurolines or a more expensive company. In Lithuania you have to visit Juodakrante and the numerous highly detailed wooden witch, goblin and other creatures huge wooden monuments in the hills behind the Curonian Spit town (you can do it as a day trip from Klaipeda but there's nothing much to see in Klaipeda). Kanaus is the best of the Lithuanian big cities, much better than the overrated Vilnius.

I would say that this is the best book that I have read up to date in this year. The author was quite successful in bringing about the chronological events of Alexander, right from his birth to his death, in very simple English, that could be understood by people who yearn to learn about history, across the world.Alexander (B.C., 356-336), son of King Philip of Macedonia, the northern province of the then Grecian territory, has been a prodigal son right from his childhood. He was under the able tutorship of Aristotle until the age of sixteen, but soon took keen interest in accompanying his father, in wars. His inborn traits of leadership, camaraderie, nobleness, organizing skills, ferociousness, and great thirst to conquer the world has made him one of the greatest warriors of ancient history, which is narrated in every history book of the world with great awe.He was highly successful in conquering each and every nation in his voyage towards the East of Macedonia, with an army as small as just 50,000. His empire consisted of almost all kingdoms of Thebes, Thessaly, Athens, Sparta, entire Persia, Egypt, Gaza, Tyre, Afghanistan and some parts of northern India. All this, just within the age of 32 years. In his great voyage of ruthless conquests, he plundered each and every kingdom which opposed him but treated all those who surrendered with great nobility and kindness. His main target of capturing his great rival King Darius of Persia could be achieved but he repents later for being responsible for the fall of such a great kingdom. He, over a period of time, when he reached the age of around 28 years, yielded to worldly pleasures like wealth, wine and women which led to his downfall in character and great qualities, for which he was adored, worldwide. At one stage, after conquering Egypt, he even went to the extent of declaring himself as the descendant of God Jupiter and wished to be called as Son of God.He ultimately loses all his friends and those who accompanied/assisted/protected him throughout his great voyage due to his vices. At one point even his great army refused to go with him further, as they lost confidence in his leadership and nobleness. This morally degraded Alexander to a great extent and he one night, put himself to intense alcohol consumption, after which he falls terribly ill, and dies due to multiple organ failure, and mostly confidence to live further. His vast kingdom broke into pieces of independent kingdoms after his death, only to remember him as the greatest and cruelest thief of the world.Positives: A great book of knowledge of Alexander’s history, beautifully written, describing each and every phase of his life in minutest of detail. The reader would not like to put off the book until he finishes it at one go. The adventures of young Alexander and his speeches are very enticing to know. One gets to know about many ancient places, towns, cities and terms of history, which are regarded as the marks of great civilizations, wars and kings in those days. A great learning experience to young and old as to how the fire in one’s belly to achieve something can get him to the target with careful and able planning, organizing, directing and controlling ones emotions, skills, environment and resources available to him or her. At the same time, Alexander’s deplorable end teaches one, as to how arrogance and power, can bring him down in no time, however great he could be! A must read by every young person and get inspired by the magnificent traits of Alexander the Great.Negatives: The author suddenly ended Alexander’s voyage with the death of King Darius. His further adventures beyond Persia into India were not described. There seemed to be equal interesting and fascinating facts to be revealed in the Indian subcontinent. That would have justified his complete voyage in a single stretch. My rating is 4.75 out of 5

The history of Alexander the Great has already been written. The book is far too simplistic and naive. The book adds nothing creative or interesting to the great life of Alexander. I would pass on this and look for something more historically interesting.. just about anyone can write an overview and who wants to spend time reading it?

We enjoyed this book, read aloud with 4th grader. The graphics did not come through on the kindle at all, I suppose I should've given a lower rating for that but because of quality of older literature I left it high. There is a moral voice from the author which I enjoyed, he can be quite wordy, Alexander was a real rebel rouser, not someone who would be highly esteemed today, but well worth the historical connection between the ancient world coming into the time before Christ. We laughed at the absurdity of some stories such as the man who came to greet him as he was about to plunder the city. Alexander did not like the city so he vowed to do the opposite of what the man might say as a deal. The man said, we welcome you to attack our city, and so he decided to let them be, something to that effect, much better read from the story than my short memory!

I went on a tour of Asia Minor last month and visited several of the old cities conquered by Alexander the Great. After listening to the tour guide talking so much about Alexander, I decided to check this book just for facts-checking. This is a good book, easy to read, and easy to follow. Note that on the kindle version the links to the maps are not working.

So before I read this book I knew of Alexander the Great (most people do) and I knew just a tiny bit about his life and actual conquest. For a free book on my Kindle it was perfect! I had a desire to understand a historical person that is well known and this book goes through his life and conquests in an interesting and easy to understand way.The maps not opening was very annoying. Some of the reviews complain about this being a huge problem but I don't think you can complain about a free book. It definitely would have been nice to see on a map the places that Alexander and his army went. It would have probably been even more useful as far as having a good understanding of the history, but you can go online and see some maps if you really want to. The book definitely deserves a fair 4 out of 5. If your looking for a nice overview of Alexander the Great that is not boring reading and very informative then I think you've found it.

The book itself is very well written. I don't know a whole lot about J. S. Cabot, but I really enjoy his style.Beware that he is a moral writer and doesn't fail to pass judgements on to the heros of each narrative. I personally enjoyed these little tangents. It may not be the most scholarly piece of work, but it's engaging and makes me desire to know more about the subjects of his work.My only complaint is the lack of pictures. Cabot took a lot of time to put works of art and other pieces in the book and they are all missing save for the description. I guess you can't really complain for a free book.

I have read other books from the "Makers of History" series by Jacob Abbott & John S. C. Abbott. They are not exceptional books - relatively no insight into the title characters of the books. But they are a general outline and time-line of the historical figure's life and accomplishments. And since they are free on Kindle - it's a fine start.

Among the things pointed out by the author is the fragility of truth in tales from centuries B.C. At various points these are obvious. They quickly become a fixture in the mind as an ever-present plausibility. It is fascinating to read of the conquests of Alexander and to realize that he was a borderline barbarian - so close to rising a notch higher. An interesting and entertaining read. The lack of maps is easily overcome.

Review

"A kaleidoscopic collection of beautifully reproduced, breathtaking images." – Gregor Leigh, Cape Town ArgusBook of The Month (March 2014) – Coast Magazine "This book gets you thinking about waves – and surf photography – in new ways. It starts out with a feast of fresh angles and achingly perfect lineups, interspersed with quotes from some of surfing's most dedicated devotees. But then, instead of leaving the reader hanging with gratuitous images of saline perfection, it guides you through the actual process of capturing perfect wave images yourself. It's a toolkit cleverly disguised as a coffee table book, so beautifully presented that you never even realise you're learning something along the way." – Bradley Hook, Surfd.com

My dad was a surfer before he had children. He even used to make surfboards. A few years ago, he was diagnosed with cancer and right before he died, I bought him this book. It was amazing to watch him flip through the pages and the light that would come to his eyes when he would see the waves and the beautiful images of the ocean. I was so grateful to be able to buy something like this for him to give him those memories before he passed.

BEAUTIFUL TABLE TOP BOOK

We were nervous to give this to our photographer surfer friend. He loved it, particularly because it has different artist’s work.

Gave this book as a gift to a teen who loves surfing. He loved the book. It's a quality book with impressive photos and informative text.

Gorgeous book. The photos are beautiful and the stories are interesting. Recommended for the surf aficionado of the family. Great gift.

This is a stunning book!! I've always wondered what surfing looked like from inside a wave. So very beautiful. It makes me wish I could surf.

I bought this book as a gift and it is a beautiful. This pictures are gorgeous!

Great photography! Special section on how to do surf photography from land, wave, air and underwater (I'm more of a photographer today than a water person).I was surprised to find no pictures from Santa Cruz or Mavericks but I did learn of a number of places I had not heard of. However I think I know where there are some even better places not listed...

I am beginning to go further with my homeopathic education (i.e. past the 4th edition of the Organon), and therefore am less certain about using nosodes purely as prophylactic "treatment." However, I have family members that strongly requested information about homeoprophylaxis as an alternative to "traditional" vaccines for their children. They live in a state that reluctantly allows homeopathic nosodes to be used, and I'd FAR rather have them use those than the now-standard vaccines, so I'm providing the information to them. I chose to go through the book myself before providing it to them. And I'm highly impressed. The book is clearly written, very detailed, and it's evident that there has been careful documentation by Dr. Golden in his work over the years. Explicit schedules are provided, and there is commentary about adjustments that may need to be made in some cases, and how to do it. If you believe that homeoprophylaxis is a legitimate option and alternative to vaccinating children (or adults), this is the most comprehensive method I've found in many years of searching. It's an excellent mix of theory and practice, highly detailed. If someone doesn't believe homeopathy is legitimate, that's fine. I'm not here to argue that point, both because there won't be any "winner" in this type of forum anyway, and that is NOT what Amazon book reviews are for. If you believe that homeopathy is junk science, or want to argue that there's no amount of the original substance left at the dilutions involved here, don't bother. (By the way, the latest research includes photomicroscopy OF the substance in legitimate university settings in India.) I'm the original skeptic - no, change that to the original rude detractor. I attended my first presentation on homeopathy at a local health food store almost 30 years ago for pure comedy purposes only, having nothing better to do that night - already completely convinced that those stupid Latin names and number/letter combinations (such as 10x, 30c, etc.) were an absurd joke, totally scientifically unsupportable. But that was nearly 30 years ago. I won't even entertain a conversation on the efficacy of homeopathy. This is not the place for a "homeopathy works vs. homeopathy is a fraud" argument. The book - whether misguided or not - is WELL researched, well laid out, and quite clear. And that's what this review is about, not the efficacy of homeopathy itself. If you believe in it, the book is an excellent resource - perhaps the best of its kind. If you don't believe in it, why would you bother even reading a review, let alone the book itself?Oh - and a 5-star review from us is not easy to get. A really, really good product typically gets a strong 4-star review. If we give it a 5-star review, it's because we believe it is, or is among, the very best of the best, standing far above most other similar product offerings.

Amazing reference book, much more than I ever expected. I gem.

Celar information, científic support for those who need it to live. A life compilación that is a great tool for the growing need of these day parents that week for a less tóxico and natural life style for the their kids.

very informative!

This is a great book on homeopathic immunization (homeoprophylaxis - HP). I am not a homeopath, and so I was a little concerned that it would be really dry, when I saw that it was the practitioner's manual. However, Dr. Golden does not get bogged down in difficult to understand topics. I thought the book was fascinating. Dr. Golden discussed short term and long term protection afforded by homeoprophylaxis and went through the evidence of it's use in the past. He also discussed his 15 year immunization plan used in Australia and the recent successful mass Cuban homeopathic immunization programs against Leptospirosis (2007 & 2008). The use of homeoprophylaxis (immunization with homeopathics rather than vaccinations (shots)) as an effective method of immunization is very compelling. Dr. Golden goes through and examines the evidence from several studies. If you are looking for double-blind randomized control studies you will not find them here. However HP has been used for centuries (yes centuries -homeoprophylaxis is only 2 years younger than traditional vaccinations). Also contained in this book are the reactions to the HP program that the parents documented in their children. This was valuable information, showing that IF there was a reaction (98% of doses caused NO reaction) then most reactions were mild. Dr. Golden also explained clearly that all "reactions" were NEVER toxic or dangerous. He uses statistical analysis in his Australia program to show the safety of the program. Interestingly he showed that children immunized with HP were actually healthier than completely unvaccinated children and even those that received constitutional care by a homeopath. Obviously children who had been vaccinated by conventional means were the least healthy of the group, showing statistically significant correlations to asthma, eczema, & ear infections.Dr. Golden explained some philosophy on the use of HP and even went through arguments that some homeopaths have against HP, being very thorough in his explanations why he is FOR it.All in all, a very interesting and informative book that I highly recommend!

Very informational book. I bought it to go with the class that Dr. Golden teaches on homeoprophylaxis.
