I am very disappointed in this TINY book.....The description didn't make it clear that this is all prose and nothing more. It is a very small format and there are NO paintings.... Too much money for 96 tiny pages with none of his paintings. I will return it.

In what was a great disappointment, I discovered that the 2013 Unicorn Press re-print of this excellent book does *not* include the plates of Churchill's paintings. All of the used editions I've seen include those plates in color.

Other people have commented on the lack of plates, it's true, sadly they didn't include them, it would have been a terrific book with that. That aside, the way Churchill waxes on the hidden benefits that come from painting, especially in oils, makes for a very inspiring read. He started at age 40, a late bloomer he admits. I was intrigued by all the things he was able to see that came from creating art. I won't spoil things by revealing his insights in his short easy to read book, but it has a very inspiring effect and will make you want to go pick up a brush or pencil, and without being timid in doing so..I will re-read this book again when I am needing encouragement, such positive thoughts are in it, he makes very good points!

I watched an interview with former President George W. Bush saying how this essay made him realize he wanted to paint. As an illustrator my whole life, I hadn’t considered painting until recently. I read this book and it inspired me much as it did the former president! I loved it. It was an easy read as it’s more of an essay than a book and it was shipped to me quickly which I loved.

This is the edition which is illustrated with images of Churchill's paintings. its a small book filled with inspiration for the beginning painter and its a keeper in my art library. I'm a late bloomer in the field of visual representational art as was Churchill and its delight full to find that he also began painting to express creativity and to be in the moment. For him to escape the cares of government, for me, to transcend an ordinary life.

The amazon description did not make it clear this book is text only. There are no photos of Churchills paintings in this book. Total disappointment when I discovered that fact after receiving the book. I am really irked at Amazon for not making this clear before I pushed the order button

In this little volume, just a few thousands words, Churchill makes his case for why one should take up painting as a pastime or hobby. Mainly, he say, it helps you to see better, to see, for example, that a tree is not green, but a hundred or a thousand shades of green and other colors. In Churchill's case, he started painting in oils in his 40s and then became more serious about it after his retirement, or semi-retirement, from public life.Did Churchill convince me to try it. I'm not sure. I'm thinking about it, though.

This is such a fascinating book. I picked up a copy at a lending library and was amazed to learn that Churchill had taken up painting as a hobby and that it became one of the main passions of his life. Painting changed the way he looked at things - nature and art. It gave him absolute joy as he increased his ability to capture light and images. I wanted to share the book with one of my friends so I ordered this copy and was very pleased that it was a good price, in good condition including having the 18 colour plates and it arrived within days. I highly recommend this marvelous true story.

I bought this book to review for PhD candidacy exams and look back on it once every six months for reference. This book explains in a very clear way the most fundamental concepts in theoretical chemistry, particularly dynamics. It touches very little on quantum chemistry, ie electronic structure theory, as there are many other books on that topic available already. The coverage of Fermi's golden rule and response theory is very accessible.Even at $50, this would be the best money one could spend on a graduate level textbook on quantum dynamics. I can't imagine someone in the field not finding this book useful at almost any stage of their career.

Small, but filled with extremely valuable notes on pretty much all of the most important concepts of quantum chemistry. An absolute must own.

This book isn't for the first time QM experience. It skips right past all the basics and starts with two awful chapters on group theory that just seem out of place in the context of the rest of the book. I'm really not sure why they are there... After that, this book is golden. Its not overly thorough, but covers quite a bit of ground in the 300+ pages you get. I love the style, coming from a physical chemistry perspective. This book cant be beat for the price. I only wish it were longer. Not taking the group theory stuff into consideration, (you can just skip it... Its not used anywhere else in the book) this is definitely 5 stars for the price.

I enjoyed this book as a review of some quantum mechanics basics. The applied examples are pretty good. This would be an excellent book to use as a source of problems if one were teaching an undergraduate class.

This book is too good to spoil with long plot summaries here...just read it. There are three intertwining stories each of whose meaning folds together brilliantly with the others. The story of an abused Native American boy growing up on a down-sized crowded allocation of tribal land, the story of an independent wilderness-seeking Japanese traveler with no fear and the story of the intrepid journalist and naturalist writing about a Grand Canyon murder and what that reveals within her own life...it all converges together into an amazing space of understanding and healing where you wouldn't normally go. I could not put this book down while reading it.

My daughter and I were in Supai and the campground on May 9-10,2006. We had no idea what was going on but something wasn't right and we left a day earlier than planned. Learn the truth about what has happened in them, and to them, and how they came to be. Learn what was lost when these lands were gained, and apreciate how much more we stand to loose if we don't protect them, now that we've taken them. Learn their history and about the people to whom they origionally belonged, and the reasons their deep wounds still fester today.And if you want take the trek into the bright Garden of Eden canyon of Havasupai, to see the otherworldly falls, know before you go. Don't go in ignorant. Learn about its centuries long dark history, and its present day dark reality. And if you catch a glimpse behind the (tourist) curtain of its truth, aim to understand and don't judge. Have the deepest and utmost respect. And be safe. Annette McGivney

Phenomal read!! I was introduced to this book through the Outside Magaine Book Club group on Facebook. There are so many layers to this book, and each layer is intriguing and insightful. One layer is a Capote true crime story about a young international tourist who was murdered while visiting Havasu Pai near the Grand Canyon, and like Capote McGivney feels a personal connection with the murder, however she takes a step further and also has a connection with the victim, and then include her personal trauma into the book, and how it all relates. She also includes bits of history, and anthropology/archaeology into the story. Page after page is a roller coaster of emotions. At times I felt like I was going to cry, and then I was angered, and then I learned something. This is a must read for anyone who loves the outdoors, true crime, or just wants to get lost in a good story.

I really enjoyed the first 2 books in the series. They were imaginative, clever and had good characters. This one was a bit of a letdown.Minor spoilers ahead.This book picks up about 16 years later with Wren, the daughter of the previous main characters Hester and Tom. Wren is a rather annoying, typical teen, suffering typical teen angst about her parents and boys. It makes for some dull reading until the plot finally gets moving. She doesn't evolve much as a character or become particularly likable. You don't really care what happens to her.Hester is suddenly a very violent, murderous person and it doesn't quite gel with her character in the previous books. She murders a number of people in brutal ways and seems to enjoy it. This is treated very casually by the author, which I found disturbing for a book aimed at juveniles. His approach to sex is completely chaste, but he doesn't hesitate to depict murder and violent, bloody death. The book ends on a series of cliffhangers, with characters being put in some unlikely and rather forced situations. I still plan to read the next book and hope it is better than this one.

I'm not sure my 3 star rating is entirely fair. The series is interesting and the books all fairly well written. However, Reece has populated his world with hard to like characters. Hester Shaw, who wasn't so bad, and even understandably surly in the first novel, has become entirely detestable by the third novel. She isn't an intriguing anti-hero like a Mad Max. She is just an awful selfish person. The one character who seemed really admirable, Anna Fang has been turned into an unlikable monster. All these unpleasant people make it hard to even want to read the books.

I don't know.I was super excited to read the third book but frankly,the characters have changed so much. Tom and Hester are grown up,married,with a child, and they're just no longer the same at all. This one is much darker, a bit more violent and a little disappointing because unlike the last two,there's no happy ending with Tom and Hester flying off in the Jenny Hanniver into the bright sunset. Perhaps the final book will be a little happier and less dark?

I loved this book! Because we have had 2 books to really get to know and care about the characters this book, was able to build on generational narratives and tie together some deeper emotional plot lines. Lots of great twists and action, moving from many different worlds. Well done!!

The constant shift of Point-of-Views (headhopping) was distracting, but the story was decent. I’m not sure I like where the author is taking Hester Shaw, or what he’s making her into, but I won’t give away spoilers.Yes, I’ll pick up the final book in the series, just to see how the story is wrapped up.

Mortal engines really should have been a one book show. The story is very forced and progresses poorly.

These books are really easy popcorn kind of reads, that you can knock out real quick. That being said, I put this book down multiple times and just kind of finished it to finish it. Being 3 books in, you would think by now that by now the reader would have a real affinity for the main characters, but I found that I like them less than ever. Also, an editor needed to help clean up some of the dialog here because its beyond awful.

An excellent riveting installment to an outstanding adventure! I am starting to read the fourth and final installment to find out the exciting ending of this great tale!..
