The best personal memoirs combine struggle, grit, humor, tenacity, and triumph to tell the heroine’s journey. So many of the currently popular feature a 20-something who struggled for all of eight months to launch a lifestyle website, grow her Instagram following from zero to 10,000, and pay off five figures of credit card debt, all while living rent-free in her parents’ basement. This is not that kind of memoir.Bees on a Bicycle is the tale that so many 40- and 50-somethings are living today. Discovering mid-career that the education and business experience you’ve amassed make you overqualified, or too expensive to employ, when company loyalty is a thing of the past. Coping with the harsher sides of adulthood. The death of aging parents. The death of a marriage. The end of a business. Betrayals, large and small. The loss of a home, friends, beloved pets. So much grief. So much empty space. But don’t let that put you off. After the grief, there is space for something new. New friendships. New opportunities. New homes. New practices. New love. Rebuilding life, one bittersweet brick at a time. Honoring the lessons of the past to move forward, not in a barely surviving kind of a way but in a life is a grand adventure to savor kind of way.Reinvention is not for sissies. Cath’s story is relatable, in a way the insta-transformational memoirs are not. Her book is the gateway to an intimate world where secrets, anxieties, fears, laughter, and victories are all shared with humor and grace. If you are looking to get unstuck, be entertained, or be inspired, Bees on a Bicycle is the perfect read.

I read an inordinate amount of nonfiction but rarely anything self-help or autobiographical. But I had been looking for an inspirational book for a friend who has recently lost her husband and job and is struggling to redefine her life. Bees on a Bicycle came across by radar and after reading the first few pages felt likeI was having a chat with an old friend. Cath Shaw Truelove has a gentle way of affirming without being braggadocio yet she isn’t self-deprecating either. Her experiences may very well resonate especially with other Southern women who grew up ingrained with that subliminal message that self-awareness was not particularly valued in women. After reading the book it makes me want to find a reason to be in Chattanooga to go by Bees on a Bicycle for a chat and cup of tea with the author. I bet it would be time well spent.

My husband and I just finished reading Bees on a Bicycle: Finding Heart and Home in Small and Significant Ways. We both loved it! The book is a quick and easy read, but don’t read it too quickly or you may overlook all there is to learn. Cath Shaw Truelove writes in a casual, almost conversational style that will make you feel you are chatting with her over a cup of tea. While being open and authentic about the challenges in her life (divorce, loss of a job, and death of her mother and a beloved dog), she shares wonderful tips on how she found peace, happiness and balance. She illustrates how to be open to life’s opportunities, how to truly listen to your heart, and suggests clever ways to connect to customers and your community, while making lifelong friendships along the way. I think everyone who reads this book can relate to one or more of the losses Cath has experienced – the book is bound to touch you in many ways.

It has been said that life can be a cruel teacher because often we get the experience before learning the lesson. This little gem of a book reminded me of so many moments in my own life where I had to deal with the hard knocks life had thrown at me and how, with persistence and perseverance, I thrived. I found myself unable to stop reading Cath's words as they touched the depths of my soul with her honesty, vulnerability, coupled with wisdom and clarity that only comes when you know you have found your purposeful path. There are some things in life that one just has to learn to live with because you can’t change the past; but as the author so eloquently describes, you can get rid of emotional and physical baggage if you are willing to face them head on knowing that they can no longer keep your wings pinned down because you are in control and you can indeed move forward without fear, regret or anger to a place where you can find love and laughter, but only when you allow yourself to open up with the realization that having less is more.

From the mundane to the sublime, being whisked away on the back seat of a bicycle built for... bees, in this largely autobiographical story we are taken on an intimate and inspiring journey together with Ms. Truelove. As we ride in tandem with her through cycles of high praises and human accomplishment, defeat, disappointment, and unrealized dreams, to the place where dreaming begins - at her inspired new business, Bees on a Bicycle - one can both imagine and believe in greatness arising from the tiniest seedlings in our own lives. Cath ushers us onward on this adventure in a most relatable and refreshing way, in a heartfelt manner which causes us to question the very essence of our own purpose. As we see a little of ourselves in her seasoned ideas, experiences, and soul-searching challenges, we are encouraged to assess what footprint we ourselves are making in the world around us. We are nudged on toward finding that great seed within ourselves as well, questioning what steps we are taking to use our natural giftednesses for the purpose of educating, nourishing, and being a true companion of those around us. This is a must-read for anyone seeking to know themselves, to overcome hardship, loneliness, or fear of sameness and conventionality, as well as those seeking to be uplifted with a new-found sense of hope and vision for a better future. I highly recommend this book.

Compact and concise, ONCE UPON A TIME is a literate and knowledgeable overview of the fairy tale, broadly construed. Author Marina Warner is a renowned scholar of mythology and fairy tales with numerous other books in the field. Here, she synthesizes and condenses her scholarship in a lively book of less than two hundred pages.Much of the first part of the book is devoted to matters of definition. What are the defining characteristics of a fairy tale? In exploring this, Warner discusses the brotherhood with folk tales and the kinship with fantasy. She suggests that the German term "Wundermärchen" ("wonder tale") better captures the quality of the genre than does "fairy tale" or "folk tale", as it "recognizes the ubiquity of magic in the stories." Later in the book, she also discusses more recent variations such as the literature of magical realism. She notes that for many fairy tales there are multiple variations, and goes on to address briefly why that is so: is it because they all are products of a collective unconscious or, instead, because they are local, individualized renditions of tales that have, over time, travelled from place to place and generation to generation? (Warner tends towards the latter view.)In her overview of the history of the fairy tale, Warner goes back to the "Arabian Nights" and "faerie" elements in Shakespeare's plays, such as Queen Mab and Puck. Due attention is given to the major figures primarily responsible for outlining the traditional fairy tale in the western world, people like Marie-Catherine D'Aulnoy, Charles Perrault ("Mother Goose"), and the Brothers Grimm. Towards the end of the book, Warner discusses how in recent years fairy tales have matured, going from "children's literature" to more adult fare and expanding in content, settings, and themes. Two writers who receive a fair amount of attention -- "the two greatest contemporary masters of the rational mode of fairy tale" -- are Italo Calvino and Angela Carter. The penultimate chapter deals with fairy tales "on the stage and screen."The way I have outlined the book might give the impression that it is more academic or pedantic than it actually is. Warner imparts her erudition lightly and gracefully. The book is quite well-written, with flowing prose. That ONCE UPON A TIME is aimed at a lay audience is indicated by the fact that there are no footnotes, although sources are identified in a twelve-page "Further Reading" section at the end of the book. I doubt that there is a more comprehensive, informative, and readable book on fairy tales that is less than two hundred pages (even, probably, three or four hundred).

A fine addition to the corpus of fairy tale scholarship, and I recommend it, especially to those who are just embarking on this academic and intellectual adventure--and to those who just like fairy tales. I am reading as someone who belongs to both groups, and a third, one of those who is exploring the fairy tale through retellings. The chapter titles almost do the job of discussing the book's value and purpose and intended audiences: The Worlds of Faery: Far Away and Down Below; With a Touch of Her Wand: Magic & Metamorphosis; Voices on the Page: Tales, Tellers, & Translators; Potato Soup: True Stories/Real LIife ...you get the idea.A few sample passages from this book written by an award-winning scholar of fairy tales and mythology (including the superb From the Beast to the Blonde: On Fairy Tales and their Tellers, 1994) would also do the job:".... the Ocean of Story ... encircles the earth since recorded time... We swim, float, or navigate this fluid and marvelous body of water as a matter of course; mass media television, game shows, video games, and every kind of popular entertainment trawl it daily to bring up plots and characters, animals and motifs" (xx)."... the historical reality that can be excavated from fairy tales does not carry the memory of extreme horrors, specific tragedies, or individuals, but rather dramatizes ordinary circumstances, daily sufferings, needs, desires-and dangers especially of dying young" (91)."This is the way fairy tales should be: like the splinter from the spindle, they can enter you and remain for a hundred years of dreams" (112)."Fairy tales are stories that try to find the truth adn give us glimpes of greater things--this is the principle that underlies their growing presence in writing, art, cinema, dance, song" (178).I could go on.Recommended. Excellent list of titles for further reading.

I find it difficult to review this book because I imagine that if a reader knows and likes Warner's work, it might be fascinating. She knows a lot and offers two or three or four brilliant insights. However, the title is misleading. This is a meandering and undisciplined (and slight) work that dwells far too much on recent literary fairy tales for my taste. Is Angela Carter a major figure in fairy tale history? Write a book about her, then. A reader looking for a history of the fairy tale, especially of the oral fairy tale, will be disappointed. I'm selling my copy.

I am a victim of my own misplaced expectations in ordering this charmingly titled book. I should have known, having read Ms. Warner before, not to expect entertainment in lieu of education. I would say this is essential reading for would-be students of fantasy and fairy tale and rich enough to please many entertainment seekers, but don't expect a storyteller, expect a historian. It is more academic than entertaining. Ms. Warner's attention to little-known (to the likes of me anyway) detail, her commentary on artistic license & political correctness woven into the history, and her including samplings of stories and verse from the storytellers she chronicles are well worth the ticket. I suppose I denied her a star because I wanted a story. Boo hoo.

I absolutely loved this book, and I'm sure I will revisit it time and again. Warner takes you on a delightfully insightful walk through all things fairy tale. Her voice is warm and engaging, educating yet never boring. Read this enchanting book now, it will lead you to a more happily-ever-after, at least when it comes to understanding fairy tales :)Seriously, if you're on the fence, don't be - this book is a winner!

It is fascinating, but reads like an academic PHD dissertation. The references are great, and much of it is familiar to me as a lifetime reader of fairy tales and legends, but it gets bogged down in these references. I couldn't find the focus of any of it.

"When children's bullying and ostracizing behavior threatens a school community, we must confront its source. But schools must also nurture variety in personalities, learning styles and personal histories...Cautioning educators on quick-time diagnosis, labeling, medication, and tutoring, Goertz weaves enthralling stories to help school communities accept and embrace all members."—Patricia Oriti, Montessori Educator & Consultant"In Donna Goertz's classroom the "problem" child is given value with a candor which continually falls back on positive community values. Engaging work is a catalyst for academic and emotional growth. This is an inspiring vision of challenging classroom dilemmas."—Debbie McKee Gorence, Behavior Specialist"Master Montessori teacher Donna Bryant Goertz teaches children compassion, generosity, cooperation, and collaboration by letting life be the curriculum. These stories show how they slowly learn to work and play with each other peacefully. If you have ever loved a child, you will treasure this book."—Terry Masters, former public school teacher"Goertz's children embrace two ideas: that serving others in need is paramount, and that needing and accepting help is a gift one child can give to another. This book captures the community of compassion and cooperation at the heart of Montessori education."—David Kahn, Executive Director, North American Montessori Teachers' Association

If you love children, this book is wonderfully insightful for sharing ways to show them understanding and care in the moments that seem the most challenging. Donna is the best at modeling thought provoking phrases to help children step back and appreciate each other just when they want to exclude each other. She gives me courage and confidence to do Montessori authentically, because I have greater understanding of how the whole prepared environment, especially including the social order, work together to allow children to reveal themselves to us and each other. It's so powerful and I return to it again and again whenever I need to be reinspired and especially when there's that day or that child that I just can't seem to understand. It's a great read before sleeping on those nights when you can't get the kids out of your head...

Many years have passed since this book has first been published, and while it is a great and helpful read, I feel that some of the problems are not as easily approached today as they have been 15, 25 or 50 years ago. But regardless, it is well written, easy and enjoyable to read and helps a (Montessori) teacher to stay open minded when looking for a new approach to an issue. In fact, I recommended this book to quite a few parents, hoping that it will give them some guidance and insight. Miss Vanessa [...]

I had the pleasure to read and comment on this book before publication, and I have been waiting impatiently for its appearance on bookstore shelves. For over 30 years, Donna Goertz has been painstakingly building a classroom culture that begins to resemble the ideal described in the works of Dr. Maria Montessori. While many settle for a diluted form of Montessori practice (e.g., accelerated math with fancy manipulatives), Goertz's aim is to serve Montessori's ultimate vision of a peaceful world inhabited by adults whose best impulses for creativity, altruism, self-knowledge and moral integrity had been supported at every step by a system of education based on the universal developmental needs of the child. To realize such a vision requires an uncommon level of skill and personal reflection on the part of the teacher.Goertz has a reputation for taking on the "difficult" children that have not been successful in other educational settings, and much of the book is devoted to case studies of these children as they are gradually transformed by the Montessori classroom environment and Goertz's own masterful interventions. She calls these children "weathervane children" because they are the ones who "show which way the wind is blowing" in the classroom; i.e., being vulnerable themselves, they tend to be the first to show the effects of some aspect of the classroom community that is out of alignment with the true needs of the children. In this respect, says Goertz, they are the teacher's best friends, doing a great service to the community of those more robust children who may suffer in relative silence. (It has been said that the greatest impediment to the advancement of pedagogy is the resilience of children.)During the 1998-99 school year I assisted Goertz in her classroom, and it is gratifying to see that she has to a remarkable extent been able to capture in words the atmosphere of the school, the "feel" of the classroom, and the personalities of the individual children about whom she writes. This book is not a handbook of "classroom management," a teacher's self-help book, a "how-to" of Montessori techniques, a critique of traditional education, or an educational memoire. I see it as a lovingly detailed report on the progress of one long-term experiment in creating peaceful, peace-loving human beings through education of the whole person in community. Richly textured, it invites reading on many levels. The book should be of interest not only to classroom teachers, but also to parents (especially parents of "difficult" children), spiritual leaders, school counselors, psychologists, sociologists, peace educators, and those interested in studies of community formation and life.

So many education philosophy books stay in the realm of the philosophical. Although this is not a how-to book, the author gives many useful stories and language for promoting growth and harmony in a Montessori classroom. I talked about it so much my husband is reading it now! As parents and foster parents this is invaluable to us. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I just completed reading this book. I am on the Governance Council for a small montessori school, where my three boys have attended for 5 years and still going. I loved this book, but I must point out that this is from an AMI teacher and school not AMS. There are some differences that an AMS teacher or parent will immediately notice in the book. That being said, there isn't a better book that I've read regarding inclusive and peaceful negotations with children. Donna is a role model for all of us in how she interacts with the children, how she challenges the class to be involved in each child's challenges and truly loves and believes in each child. I have purchased a second book to have in our "parent resource" library for our school.

I homeschool four children and have my own un-peaceful child. I have tried everything from diet to reward charts to iron discipline, but nothing works for long. This book has been a real eye-opener for me, and shows me that part of the problem lies with my combative relationship with him. Goertz models through case study after case study the preferred, non-violent way to cope with obnoxious, even violent children, validating them in their strengths while moving away from their weaknesses.I feel even more convicted by her section about over-stimulated children in a cluttered, noisy world. She suggests, for example, keeping 90% of the toys stored away and rotating them so that the environment stays more ordered and so the children can take control of their own surroundings without being overwhelmed.Messy rooms, she says, are the parents' fault, not the child's. Egad! This book is definitely one to purchase and keep on your parenting shelf, reading and re-reading to get the gist of this loving and compassionate approach to children who, for whatever reason, find it hard to integrate into a team, be it classroom or family. If you live in Austin, Texas, beware! You may be tempted to mortgage your home to send your children to Goertz's school and let them benefit from her wisdom first-hand!

This book is amazing, it has given me such practical and explicit ideas on how to create a sense of true community, with responsibility and shared values in the classroom.

Really cool photos!

The photos in this book - all of which are in b&w - convey a very strong sense of time and place. It's rather amazing that the photographer was able to take the photos, given the circumstances. There's also a very interesting introduction and interview with the photographer, as well as drawings & narratives from a few of the subjects.
