The Collected works of John of the Cross describe a privileged topography of the Ascent to the love of God. The reader is advised to follow the classic Carmelite advice and read the poetry first and perhaps the Living Flame or The Spiritual Canticle in order to see the heights that we are called to in our relationship with God. Perhaps one then will have the courage to delve into the Ascent of Mount Carmel and the Dark Night to see the God also speaks in what can appear to be the darkness of renunciation in our human experience. While many can become discouraged with his doctrine of detachment this proves to be the surest path to become intimately attached to and in union with God. This method may still prove to be daunting and it is wise to seek others who comment on these writings for help and guidance. Many speak from experience when they acknowledge that their lives have been profoundly changed as they walk along with the Saint and Holy Man.

I don't know how to read poetry. But I have fallen in love with this book and St. John of the Cross. He devotes pages and pages to describing his intent behind the poetry. This book has already been profound in deepening my prayer experience.

The main theme running through all the works in this collection (The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Dark Night, The Spiritual Canticle, and the Living Flame) is that of letting go, or detachment. Just as one would ascend a mount, so it is that detachment is accomplished in a difficult, wearying, step by step manner. The first step is disciplining the physical body through prayer and the use of sacramentals. After the body has been brought in line with the will, the next step is directing the soul toward God, and here some of the sure and familiar comforts of this life are left behind as one ascends to higher and higher intimacy with the Lord. These first two steps are active, and many who set their minds to it can, with God's grace, attain this relationship. The next and final phase of the ascent is completely passive - it is God, the bridegroom, who moves toward the bride, the soul, and the soul surrenders to Him totally. To reach this passive surrender is anxiety-inducing - the dark night - and it requires a grace and perseverance granted only to a few in this life, the saints.Cardinal Wiseman said of Fray John "...one feels in reading him that he has to deal with the master of a science. There is no wandering from the first purpose, no straying aside from the pre-determined road... every division and subdivision of the way has been chartered from the beginning by one who saw it all before him... St. John invents nothing, borrows nothing from others, but gives us clearly the results of his own experience in himself and in others... He represents the ideal of one who has passed, as he had done, through the career of the spiritual life, through its struggles and its victories."And so it is that in these writings one will not encounter the sayings of the Desert Fathers; nor will the internal life of St. Augustine ring familiar, nor Kempis' exhortation to imitation; no, instead a wholly unique universe of Catholic mystical thought is revealed. Actually, the one prominent influence (outside of holy writ) comes from a completely unexpected source in dealing with the mystical: that great master of syllogism, St. Thomas Aquinas, the Angelic Doctor. In fact, the deeply-rooted scholasticism of St. John is what gives his works coherence - especially since most of them are unfinished, at least in light of the author's stated goals.St. John is the most unsettling author I've read to date. It took about twice as long for me to read, not because of the author or the subject matter, but rather the implications of his writings: if it is anxiety-inducing for the soul that is in the Dark Night, I found that simply contemplating what it would mean to enter into it shattering all my conceptions of what it means to be holy. In this respect, this book left me as one dumbfounded, standing before an abyss, desperately trying to peer into it for any spark of light: then the voice of St. John telling you to let go of the rails and leap into that abyss, forgetting everything you think you know about God. To loosen the grip of base desires on our heart is one thing; to contemplate loosening one's intellectual grasp is quite another - and much scarier - thing.I'll have to come back to this collection a second time. Probably multiple times. I'm glad I read it, but it has quite literally stopped me in my tracks; after reading about 70 works or so in the past 2 years, I have not read a single page in the two months since I put this volume down. It's taken me that amount of time to even think of writing a review on it.Strange.

I became a Roman Catholic in 1990, while I was serving with the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles at Santa Teresita Medical Center in Duarte, CA. My introduction to Saint John of the Cross happened as a response to a desire I made known to the Sisters. I wanted something deeper in my relationship with God and Saint John of the Cross was the answer the Carmelites provided. If you desire to ascend Carmel and realize a deeper and more profound faith this collection may aid you in your journey.Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint Therese of Lisieux are must reads as well!

This is the recommended translation by Dr. James Finley and Richard Rohr, OCS as presented in their workshop, "Intimacy: The Divine Ambush." The content is superb and includes the original Spanish poetry as well as elaborations on the life of Juan Yepes. My ONLY frustration was the size of the book and the print. As crazy as it may sound, a binder or set of binders that you could pull pages out from, hold and contemplate, pore over is really what this material requires, you can spend hours, days, weeks over a single paragraph, hence a book that stays open, comfortable with Itself, resting on the table in front of you is more the type of friend you need as far as edition style for this type of reading. This is a read of a lifetime, I doubt my copy will last even a few years, but then maybe I'll punch wholes in the pages and put them in a binder.St. John of the Cross was profoundly human in the most integral sense of what that means. His journey of the Dark Night of the Soul is a map into what it means to be transformed through trauma and grief and arrive at an inner union of our human and divine nature . His guidance comes from the core of his suffering with a depth of love that only a truly transformed individual can offer selflessly. These writings are about what happened to him and how he found the way through it. "The Living Flame", "Spiritual Canticles", are the fruition of the journey, the self liberated from its limitations rises into the fullness of Being.

An excellent compilation. Clean, clear, readable text, just a shade off of black. It's difficult to craft 800 pages into a hand-holdable book, but ICS Publications makes a chair-side reference. Highly recommended.

If you are interested in becoming a Third Order Carmelite, it's an exceptionally rich read. I'm still reading it very slowly, and as I'm disposed to becoming a secular Carmelite, the teachings have fueled my desire to serve through this Catholic order. Highly Recommend.

Review

This debut novel is a story of loss, love, and friendship, about a teenager coming to terms with the past and dealing with repressed memories that are resurfacing...Readers will find Otis relatable and endearing in his first-person perspective of first love and heartbreak, as well as his unwavering loyalty to his friends. Meg and Dara round out a cast of well-developed characters who have extensive troubles of their own. Most teenagers will find a little bit of themselves in this well-executed work; a must-have for most YA collections.—School Library Journal (starred reviews)The inability to let go of the past pushes all three white teens beyond their comfort zones into uncharted territory, Garner slowly and steadily guiding readers through these journeys. A heavy read weighted by intense emotions and grief, the novel sifts through tough memories, searching for the silver lining.—Kirkus ReviewsOtis’ journey—as a competitive swimmer and as a grieving brother—is a poignant one...It’s tough-talking, reckless Dara who will intrigue readers. Her struggles with her father, her sexuality, and the dreams deferred because of her accident complement Otis’ story, elevating this to a narrative as much about human connection as it is about sports.—BooklistGarner’s debut sensitively portrays Meg and Otis’s bruised emotions, both recovering from deep loss. Though the description of Mason’s accident is a gut-punch in its realism, much of the plot unfolds predictably. The novel’s strongest moments go to Dara, whose no-holds-barred personality—“she was the human equivalent of a Venus flytrap”—livens and complicates the novel.—Publishers WeeklyOtis is a refreshingly authentic male protagonist who will win readers over . . . [A]n uplifting story about resilience and the power of relationships.—BookPageIn her debut novel, Garner examines the depths of loss and despair. Ultimately, Dara and Otis and Meg come to realize that hope, though fragile, is present in celebration of the simple things in life...the subtle and nuanced character development and the slow realization of how loss must be confronted create a believable and compelling read.—VOYALike most good summer reads, Phantom Limbs by Paula Garner is a delicious slow burn...Garner’s depiction of teenage sexuality is spot on, but even more so is the way she captures and crystallizes a very specific teenage experience.—Lambda LiteraryTragedy cuts deep, and every character in this book has scars—some terribly visible and others under the surface—but they are all beautiful. Paper Towns fans take note, this will be your new favorite book.—Shelf Awareness ProGarner does a fine job cultivating the book’s titular theme, with Dara’s phantom-limb pain, Otis’s grief-filled memories, and Meg’s PTSD...evoking in readers the acute ache of losing something, or someone, vital. As her debut powerfully mines the depths of such loss, it also charts the terrain of healing that follows, leaving readers with hope via Otis’s wise insights: “If something is unbearable, then how do you bear it? It’s an oxymoron. And yet…Somehow I was bearing it.”—Horn BookThe nuanced way that Garner deals with loss is not only beautifully done, but it’s thoughtful and insightful. Phantom Limbs is a quietly affecting, well-written gem of a book that will resonate with readers, long after the last page has been reached. A definite YA standout for 2016.—Romantic Times

GRADE: AThree years ago Otis's toddler brother died at the home of his next door neighbor/best friend/first love Meg. Shortly afterward, Meg's family moved cross country and he hasn't heard from her since, with the exception of Facebook stalking. Enter Dara, his self-appointed swim coach, who lost her arm in a shark attack. Her goal: make Otis an Olympian. Now Meg's coming back to town and about to turn Otis's world up, down and every which way.PHANTOM LIMBS tackles the experiences several characters enduring PTSD through the eyes on sixteen-year-old Otis. Every high school kid should have an Otis, a thoughtful friend who doesn't drink, will take the keys of partiers who do and will drop everything if needed. He's such a good guy. He's funny, smart. A poet who thinks about sex a LOT. Though at times in a politically incorrect manner, he's never disrespectful. He knows boundaries.Meg. Wounded, even more than Otis by the loss of his brother. She doesn't say enough or let Otis in.Dara, a hot mess, maddening but easy to understand why.Otis's parents are wonderfully flawed, especially his mother. But what mother wouldn't be, after losing a son in such a tragic manner.Debut writer Paula Garner gave Otis such a unique, ironic voice. His sense of humor, often warped, kept PHANTOM LIMBS from being a downer. At times I laughed and cried in the same paragraph. Garner is a guarantee preorder for me.THEMES: PTSD, grief, sexuality, LGBT, friendship, family, siblings, parents, loss, sports, swimmingPHANTOM LIMBS is one of the best books I've read about characters living with PTSD with a story that wasn't about PTSD or trauma.

Otis, Meg and Dara make up this absolutely lovely cast of characters in Garner’s touching debut novel. A story of loss, grief and life, there is something magical about this book.Otis. Sigh. What an absolutely charming young man. Garner beautifully captured the voice of a sixteen year old boy. He is wry, conflicted, painfully hurt, sensitive, very in tune with his emotions, yet he possesses a quiet strength. His brother Mason died in a tragic accident three years ago and nothing has been the same since. He lost his best friend Meg, right at the time the two thirteen year olds began to fall in love. His parents are irreparably damaged and just so broken. All he has left is Dara, his swimming coach with issues of her own.Dara lost part of her arm in a horrible accident, thus ending her hopes of being an Olympic swimmer. She’s angry, sarcastic, smart, flawed, brutally honest but above all she is real. Her friendship with Otis is one of the most poignant and gorgeous relationships I’ve ever witnessed. They just get each other in a way that no one else does. It truly touched me deep within my heart.Meg was Otis’ best friend and for a short while, his first love. Her and her family moved away after Mason died and the two never spoke again. But now, she’s coming back. What does this mean for Otis and Meg? How does Dara fit into all of this? This book deals with some heavy issues; figuring out how to deal with ones sexuality, death, divorce, and mainly, how to move on after such a devastating loss without forgetting about the past. Is it possible to move on and still have hope for the future?Even though the issues are heavy, Garner has a beautiful writing style. She truly captures all the feelings teenagers have; confusion, an overwhelming surge of hormones and new feelings, frustration, emotional upheaval. Her dialogue reads true and sounds like teenagers talking to each other, there is nothing false or stilted about it.I literally cannot say enough good things about this captivating book and about Garner as an author. I cannot wait to see more from her and I predict that this book will be huge. I know that I will hold these precious characters in my own heart for a very long time. So go, pre order your copy now.

Phantom Limbs is a wonderful novel that deals with love, loss, and letting go. Each character is beautifully written, and Garner allows them room to breathe and grow. The stakes aren't life-or-death high: it's more like a slice-of-life introspection that focuses much more on the people than the plot. I read through it one sitting, staying up waaaay past my bedtime because I wouldn't be satisfied until I knew everything. Meg could grate a little at times, and I thought that the very, very end (no spoilers) was not the editorial choice I would have made, but these are ultimately minor complaints that did not detract from my enjoyment of this book at all. Highly recommend! It's a nice breather from epic fantasy or action-adventure YA that reminds you that contemporary can be just as memorable, well-crafted, and haunting.

Love of words, turn of phrase, emotion delivered in black and white... Phantom Limbs. Paula Garner has written a story that will stay with you long after you read the last word. It's a story about people you know, maybe even you - to want when you shouldn't, grieve for you never had, and desire, need - long after the longing should be done, for love and things lost. Excellent.

Paula Garner did such an amazing job bringing the 16-year-old narrator known as Otis to life. The dialogue is also fabulous.

Great characters and story. Enjoyable read!

Awesome book for Y. A and adults

Such a beautiful story, and lovely writing. Definitely one of my top picks in YA for 2016. Every page had sentences that were so well crafted, I just wanted to read them again and again.

Absolutely stunning eyewitness account of some of Indonesia's most grim and most recent events. I would recommend this to anyone who's living in Indonesia, just to understand the country a little better. I would consider it essential reading for expats, and I hope it will be translated into Indonesian some time soon. What really happened in East Timor? What legacy has Suharto left the nation? Is it true there was cannibalism in Kalimantan, against the Madurese? Reader gets the full scoop on these incidents, in a fast-moving, eyewitness-style reportage. Lloyd Parry does his best to be the cool-headed journalist going after the facts, but as he witnesses more and more inhumanity, we see his own humanity struggling to shine through the reports. His writing is crisp and to the point, and so his moments of shock and horror are written without embellishment. These were times of madness for Indonesia, but also for anyone who had to witness it. So that would include the author. He introduces the book with a passage about nightmares in a quiet, safe bungalow in Bali. What, reader wonders, has he seen?Format is a bit like each chapter being a good, thorough news magazine essay. Unfortunately, his publisher probably wanted to grab readers with some really sensational and gruesome stuff and so graphic bits about massacres and cannibalism make up the first chapter, even though it is out of sequence with the timeline of other events he writes about for this book. Once I made my way out of that dark jungle, I quite enjoyed the book, and I would call this the best read that really sums up what's been happening to Indonesia since the mid 90's.People out of the line of fire depend on our journalists to report on what's happening in the trouble spots of the world. I remain grateful to RLP for his courage, tenacity, and excellent writing. And I thank him for retaining his humanity and his concern for justice and simple goodness. I'd like to see more reporters like him, and more editors who let their reporters be themselves.Interestingly, the recent documentary film The Act of Killing (about men who assassinated enemies of the state in the 60's) depends to a large degree on the element of the personal viewpoint. In the west, there's growing concern and fascination with Indonesia's odd political realm. Anyone who's seen that film and been intrigued with THAT madness, can now pick up In The Time of Madness and get more insight on how this country has been dealing with its declared or imagined enemies.

Having lived in Indonesia throughout the crisis period covered by the author, this book really hit the spot, bringing back so many memories. The book works at two levels. Firstly the tragic story of Indonesia when it was right on the precipice and could so easily have fallen into total anarchy, before slowly clawing its way back to at least a semblance of democracy (sadly still a long way to go, in the face of overwhelming entrenched corruption). Secondly, the story of the author and his growth as in individual over the years of crisis. It was pleasing to follow him moving beyond his disturbing initial enjoyment of the crisis as a 'Boys Own' adventure, witnessing the horrors of headhunting and cannibalism in the ethnic turmoil of Kalimantan and the after effects of rioting and rebellion in Jakarta, to finally realising that a crime against humanity was taking place and people's lives were being destroyed in every sense in the chaos and bloodshed of East Timor. It is not possible to put the book down without feeling disgust with the disgraceful behaviour and appalling brutality of the corrupt and cowardly TNI (the Indonesian army) in East Timor. As an Australian, it also rekindled memories of our national shame, with our complicity in initially accepting Indonesia's invasion of East Timor, fortunately redeemed as the author relates with the Australian army and UN-backed intervention to rescue the new nation's citizens from massacre by the Indonesian army and militias. Not perfect, but a fascinating read at both levels.

The author was there, and he bears witness. Throughout the time I spent reading this book, I was reminded again and again of all the journalists who go into the war zones around the world and tell us what happened there. The risks they take are terrible. But like this author, those who take the greatest risks typically don't brag about it.This is a book about a particular slice of Indonesia's history. It begins with blood and violence in 1997 in Kalimantan, and it ends with more blood and violence in early 2000 in East Timor. Less than three years, and how many lives ended so horribly? Indonesia is a complex society, a nation with a huge and diverse population spread among thousands of islands, and Lloyd Parry doesn't try to tell its whole story. He weaves in some background and some history where possible, but mostly, he tells us what he saw on the ground.I really appreciated his accounts of interviews with people in villages, people who are not "the official voice." I marveled again and again at the image of him riding around in the countryside, in a truck or on the back of a motorbike, unarmed, unprotected. But how else would he have been able to talk to people under the conditions that existed then? To get these stories, the journalist must expose himself. It's brave and it's crazy. I really admire people who do this. I'm grateful that they tell us stories like this one -- as horrible as they are, these things must be told.

I lived through the years he described in the book. As it was the waning years of the New Order, we didn't have many independent news. We just knew that something terrible happened in Kalimantan and that men, women and children were being beheaded. We didn't know how wide spread it was. This book helped me look back to those years and what had happened back then.

For a shocking perspective on humanity and a tragic understanding of Indonesian history, this collection of first person memoirs of traveling in Indonesia in troubled times can't be beat. The primeval is revealed in modern times, and it isn't pretty. But the author retains his sympathy for Indonesian people and their difficult past.

Happy with purchase. Book not what I expected, but that is my fault. Expecting different subject material.
