Review

A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2019 BY ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, VOGUE, WASHINGTON POST, HUFFINGTON POST, VULTURE, LITHUB, REFINERY29 and more "Ingenious and incendiary"—THE NEW YORKER“Sensational…Mackintosh’s taut novel turns a keen, unsparing eye on violence, patriarchy, and desire.”—ESQUIRE (25 Most Anticipated Books of 2019)“Eerily beautiful, this strange, unsettling novel creeps up and grabs hold of you.”—PAULA HAWKINS, New York Times bestselling author of GIRL ON THE TRAIN“An extraordinary otherworldly debut… [Mackintosh] is writing the way that Sofia Coppola would shoot the end of the world: Everything is luminous.”—THE GUARDIAN  “[A] chilling, beautifully written novel…the tautness and tension of the writing are staggering.”—Judges Panel Citation, the MAN BOOKER PRIZE 2018“Mackintosh’s novel follows in the footsteps of The Handmaid’s Tale…but this debut has its own alluring style, which has prompted comparisons to The Virgin Suicides for its gauzy, heady sexuality; lacy, precise prose; and the luminous sisters at its core.” —VOGUE    “Mackintosh’s entry [into feminist dystopian fiction] is among the best, not least because it gets to the root of the genre by dissecting a warped utopia…Three men arrive on the island, and twists ensue — not cheap pyrotechnics but reversals of moral structure, revelations that demonstrate why the subtlest fiction is often the most powerful.” —VULTURE"Sophie Mackintosh casts an exquisite, irresistible spell in her thrilling debut. Ablaze with beauty, desire, and dread, The Water Cure is a shattering look at patriarchal control and how far three sisters will go to free themselves from it".—LENI ZUMAS, author of RED CLOCKS “At once dreamy and disturbing, The Water Cure is a gripping work, a dizzying labyrinth of conflicting realities.”—HELEN PHILIPS, author of THE BEAUTIFUL BUREAUCRAT"Creepy and sexy in equal measure, The Water Cure is a hypnotic portrait of three young women waking up to the world, desire, and the power of their bodies."—THE INDEPENDENT

I believe reviews are better left without a readers narrative of the plot and meaning. I am a fan of dystopian fiction which is why after hearing a brief review of the book on NPR, I ordered it and read it cover to cover in about a day. Stunningly beautifully written, it did not disappoint and I highly recommend it. It has a strong feminist flavor and is not for those who prefer a formulaic plot line. It's like wandering through a hazy, fascinating, but sometimes brutal dream.

“The Water Cure”, by Sophie Mackintosh, is chilling, creepy, frustrating, and profoundly disturbing. Mackintosh has created a dystopian setting, an isolated family of three daughters, Grace, Lia, and Sky. They are being “protected” from toxins on the mainland, but there are also being mentally and physically abused by their parents. I won’t reveal the plot because it’s meant for the reader to figure things out. Sort of. Though, it’s not a spoiler to say that the novel intends to be a “feminist” tale about what it means to be female, siblings, patriarchy, nature verses nurture, and the fragility of civilization. However, generalizations about “all men” are just as untrue and sexist as generalizations about “all women” and true feminism should not seek to construct an “us or them” paradigm of male: evil/female: victim. Needless to say, there is no male point of view here, and I never connected with the sister’s characters enough to care about them; ultimately the novel failed for me.I highly recommend: “The Natural Way of Things” by Charlotte Wood, which deals with similar issues and ideas.

Incredibly boring nonsense. It’s hard to tell which of the sisters is narrating, because only their superficial characteristics distinguish them - one is significantly younger, one is pregnant. And one is neither the youngest nor pregnant. There is virtually no dialogue, so you get no realer sense of how they interact except through descriptions of their weird, ritual directed life. It’s just terrible. Oh, and there is no twist near the end that pulls anything together - I kept waiting for that. Nope. It stays boring and weird the whole way through.

It's clear from the beginning that this novel takes a lot of inspiration from The Handmaid's Tale, yet still manages to exist as it's own vivid and fully formed work. Of course, this is very much a feminist text of which the overall message is essentially that the patriarchy has manufactured the societal belief that women need men to take care of them. Throughout the progress of the story the reader is introduced to a series of interesting metaphors to communicate this idea. Definitely worth a read if you are into feminism and/or allegorical science fiction. The ending might be divisive even among feminists. It could be interpreted as empowering, but it also may be taken as radical/militant. I personally fell somewhere in between. However, being a man, I'm probably the wrong person to make that call.

Elevator pitch would be: Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" meets "The Shining," the Salem witch trials and "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." And the edges of "Lord of the Flies." And "Angels and Insects."Husband and wife, three daughters, in white flowing clothes and carrying purifying salt in their hands, are isolated on an island to protect the women from a deadly plague carried by men. New Age survivalism has moved the group from family to cult with shifting rituals involving salt, iron, water, muslin, near-drowning, bonfires and the abuse of small animals.Women suffering from the male-transmitted plague once made their way to this slowly collapsing resort to be cured. Why did the flow of women stop? Where did the stream of women go? (More practically, where does the hot and cold running water come from? How is the pool beautifully maintained?)King disappears. And two men and a boy wash up on the beach. They either bring contagion with them or awaken it in the girls. In one week of alternating blinding hot glare and pouring rain, it all goes to hell.

With a referral by Margaret Atwood I was really hoping for something much better. I got through it because it is well written, but I was not engaged with the story and finished really disappointed.

It’s hard to say I loved this book*, but it will be with me for a long time to come. I did love the spare prose, the clean lines of this book, and its subtleties. Mackintosh has created a world in which the the worst extremes of our culture are exaggerated and extrapolated, where masculinity is truly toxic and women’s emotions are a danger that must be tightly controlled. Or at least that’s what the trio of sisters at the center of this novel have been convinced of.There are echoes of Eve and a fall in this book: a strange Eden where those inside the garden are protected by flaming boundary lines, where women come to find salvation, where women suffer because they are women, yearn because they are women, and suffer because they yearn. But these women have what Eve did not—sisters. *I didn’t love it because it felt a little like having the negative space in my everyday word revealed for all to see, and yet it should be said I think this is a beautiful and important book.

Review

"The best book I’ve read on the criminal justice system since Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. . . . This is the rare book that looks at criminal justice from the perspective of culture. And Godsey has the chops to tell it." (Daily Kos 2017-11-26)“The book, which is in part a confessional, looks at how innocent people can become the victims of faulty eyewitness testimony, bad forensics, and a variety of blinding cognitive biases on the part of law-enforcement personnel, prosecutors, and judges, and why the system so tenaciously defends the status quo, even when it’s guilty of railroading innocent citizens. With so much attention rightly focused on racial injustice in recent years, Godsey’s book offers another important piece of the puzzle.” (The Nation 2018-01-24)"[Mark Godsey's] book is about how his career change also changed his outlook, by showing up 'problems in the system that I, as a prosecutor, should have seen, but about which I had simply been in denial'. . . . Mr Godsey’s work is memorable because he is able to show precisely how these flaws work in action."   (The Economist)"A breathless page-turner, especially for true crime readers, drawing together Godsey and his indefatigable staff as they relentlessly power through volumes and volumes of evidence in pursuit of the truth.” (Salon 2017-09-24)“Mark Godsey, a former federal prosecutor who now heads the Ohio Innocence Project, examines the causes of wrongful convictions, from faulty eyewitness identifications to investigator tunnel vision, while drawing on a depressingly vast array of shocking examples. He graciously allows that the police, prosecutors, and judges whose ‘unreasonable and intellectually dishonest positions’ have led to unjust convictions and avoidable suffering acted not out of malice but out of the abundant capacity for human error.” - OUR FAVORITE BOOKS OF 2017 (The Progressive 2017-12-05)“Passionate and readable, this book provides meaningful support for the Innocence movement and startling insights into the justice system while admitting the reality of systemic racism but omitting its direct discussion.” (Library Journal 2017-11-01)"Blind Injustice is worth the read.  Give a copy to your favorite prosecutor.  And maybe to your neighbor." (GAMSO - for the Defense)"An excellent resource for psychology and law courses. . . . Highly recommended" (CHOICE)"Blind Injustice, instructive and passionate, is an excellent introduction to major wrongful conviction themes. It is an accessible book for laypersons and criminologists who are new to the subject. It would make a lively text in a wrongful conviction course. One wishes that it would be read by prosecutors across America. If they did, perhaps like the author, they would say, as the hymn Amazing Grace has it— 'was blind but now I see.' . . . An attention-grabbing book that powerfully instructs."  (Social Science Research Network 2018-05-04)"Godsey’s book is splendid. Everyone who cares the least bit about justice must read it. Parts will make you shake your head in amazement, parts will give you a sense of elation, and parts will make you cry. . . . There have been, over the past dozen or so years, several excellent books examining the failings of the American criminal justice system. A skeptic might wonder what there is new to say about the problems that infect the system.  But that skepticism melts almost instantly when one opens Godsey’s book. Mark Godsey brings a unique perspective to bear on the problem of convicting the innocent." (Ohio State Journal of Criminal Law 2018-05-01)

From the Inside Flap

“The high-stakes work [of exoneration] is costly, time-consuming, and frustrating, and it requires tenacity and compassion to persevere. Mark Godsey has what it takes.”—Time    “A master storyteller, Mark Godsey’s rare triple-perspective of prosecutor, innocence champion, and law professor creates a unique and beautiful voice that not only contributes significantly to the innocence movement but makes the book gripping and hard to put down. A must-read for anyone who cares about justice.”—Richard A. Leo, Hamill Family Professor of Law and Psychology at the University of San Francisco and author of Police Interrogation and American Justice   “Mark Godsey’s journey from prosecuting in the storied U.S Attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York to 'innocence lawyer' in his hometown of Cincinnati has yielded an important, candid, and scholarly meditation on the ‘cognitive’ traps that lead to wrongful convictions. This should be mandatory reading for all young federal and state prosecutors, not to mention judges and defense counsel.” —Barry Scheck, Professor of Law at Cardozo School of Law and cofounder of the Innocence Project   “This careful exploration of the psychology of criminal investigations, written in an accessible and conversational tone, exposes how even the best-intentioned officers can get evidence wrong and how we can restore truth to the criminal justice system.”—Brandon Garrett, Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law and author of Convicting the Innocent: Where Criminal Prosecutions Go Wrong

This book provides an excellent overview of the realities of our justice system. Six years ago I stumbled across a local wrongful conviction case that opened my eyes. Prior to that, I trusted the system and believed that wrongful convictions were probably extremely rare. I now understand that a person can be prosecuted and convicted with no concrete evidence whatsoever.Mark provides a unique perspective about how these horrible injustices occur. The most important thing to understand is that it truly can happen to anyone. Until you or someone close to you becomes a victim of the system, you’ll probably never know that it’s happening everywhere. It’s shocking and disturbing to think that so many innocent people spend decades behind bars. The book is interesting, easy to read, and not overly technical. I highly recommend it.

Ordered and received "Blind Injustice" by Mark Godsey and just gobbled it up! I couldn't put it down. The writing was honest, raw and real. Absolutely fascinating. Because of Godsey's background as a federal prosecutor, he offers up a unique, up-close-and-personal perspective on our skewed legal system. His real-life performances in the legal system - both as a prosecutor and an innocence lawyer - made his experiences/examples come to life for me. I actually had to set the book aside during a particularly emotional chapter about two of his former clients because I was in tears. While I know (from the forward) that this book is used as part of undergrad and law-school curriculums, Godsey also writes to and relates to the "Average Joe".And, while much of this book's content is horrifying and sad, it is also inspiring, especially the last chapter where Godsey talks about ways in which the legal system can be changed and IS changing. I learned so much from this book. It is a definite book-club read; there is SO much I want to discuss with friends who have read it!To sum it up, I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it. I hope this is not the last book Godsey writes.

Confirmation bias is an ubiquitous influence in all our daily lives and every profession. Why is it so destructive in the minds of prosecutors? Because no one has more power over the lives of their fellow citizens than they do.Absolute civil immunity, de facto criminal immunity, the resources of the state behind them, the police and crime labs work for them. They can threaten anyone they deem a suspect into a plea bargain without divulging evidence or lack thereof to their target or the defense attorney. The only check on a District Attorney’s power is the ballot box, but the tried and true “tough on crime” mantra works wonders during campaign season.Former prosecutor Godsey is so effective at describing administrative evil because he’s open-minded enough to understand he was part of it. He provides real life examples from both sides of the courtroom aisle. People who would help an old person across the street or shovel snow for their sick neighbor can also unwittingly perpetuate massive injustices, sending innocent citizens away for decades, leaving violent criminals out on the street. He emphasizes that needed reforms in eyewitness ID, interrogation, forensics, funding public defense, government accountability and transparency have already been identified. The problem is cultural. Trying to change an arrogant and entrenched criminal justice system. Each stressful wrongful conviction case takes huge commitment on the part of innocence advocates who may or may not succeed after years of effort. When a Conviction Integrity Unit is setup in a jurisdiction to review potential injustices, and the DA’s office is actually open-minded enough to get past their confirmation bias, the floodgates open and exonerations pour out (ex. Dallas, Houston and Brooklyn). It’s another testament to the power we entrust to prosecutors. My biggest wish is that young concerned citizens read this book, take it to heart, and plan how they are going to reform their justice system in the years ahead.

I saw this book written up in Time Magazine in that issue on wrongful convictions so I bought it to learn more about this problem. I was not disappointed. The book is very well written and jam packed with ideas. Barry Scheck is correct in his review on the back cover that it is a "meditation." The author cuts back and forth between stories of when he was a prosecutor and now as an innocence project attorney to make his points. That was really interesting how he did that and it works well. There are some very personal stories that he included. I learned so much. I had no idea about how confirmation bias effects even fingerprints, and some of the illustrations of memory problems and tunnel vision were alarming if not shocking. He is really honest about his time in the prosecutor's office. This book also connects problems in the criminal justice system with problems in everyday life--he even talks about his divorce!!! But he makes it work. Hard to put a label or genre on this book. It's not a textbook, it's not a memoir, it's not a novel, but it's sort of mix of all of them and he pulls it off really well. I would recommend to anyone.

This is a must-buy if you're trying to be healthier and lose weight. This takes all the Googling and stress out of meal planning. I know that all these recipes have ingredients that are approved Whole30, Paleo, Keto, etc. They suggest substitutions and you can also easily make a lot of these recipes in an Instant Pot for fast cooking (just dont forget to add some liquid to recipe). I am so glad I found this book, not sure how I stumbled upon it, but it really has improved the quality of my life. I used to spend the entire day trying to find recipes online, only to see that 1-2 ingredients were either really expensive, unobtainable, or didn't go along with my diet plan. OR I would go on a website for a recipe and be met with this really long explanation with pictures, would have to scroll past just to get to the recipe.

We made one of the recipes to the specifications in the recipe and the meal did not turn out even close to what it was supposed to be.

I should have looked to make sure there were pictures😒.It does nothing to inspire making ANY recipe. I won't make that mistake again.

The book has a total of 10 pics in the whole book of 140 pages. Good cookbooks have a recipe for each recipeor nearly so. This is like so many modern cookbooks in that it does not give directions for real cooking but justdump and heat, For example, most of her soups are based upon expensive canned broths. She gives directionshow to make rich stock in the back of the book but then for the most part just suggests using broth which is nothingmore than chicken, seafood or beef flavored water. Rich stocks are the basis for soups and stews. She does suggest lightly sauteeing onions in the French Onion soup but classic french onion soup is based upon slowing carmelizing the sugars in the onions in a skillet on low heat and stirring often to develop that deep rich brown color that colors the soup. She suggests if you don't have time just throw the onions in raw. This leaves their naturally occurring bitter flavor in raw onions. Then in her recipes for Beef and Mushroom Stew she suggests buying sliced mushrooms (more expensive) and then throwing them in the pot raw and cooking them for 6-8 hours. Wrong, the mushrooms would be mush and flavorless. What you do is to saute' the mushrooms in butter and you buy whole mushrooms and slice them right before cooking. You then do your long cooking time and toss in the sauteed mushrooms at the end and give them a stir and let them heat up for about 5 minutes to get that ultra rich mushroom flavor. If you buy already sliced mushrooms, you lose a whole lot of the mushroom flavor so why even put them in there if you are not trying to maximize the flavors? The reviewer is the author of the Kindle book entitled:Sex Education for Adults Secrets To Amazing Sex and Happily Ever After Too.The best review on the book is by a licensed marriage counselor who creditsthe book for saving his marriage. It is on the AASECT recommended reading list.I was recently offered a TED talk on the bookAnyone who is an accomplished cook would know this.

I will be using this cookbook a LOT!

Good recipes but I like seeing what I’m making first.

Love this cookbook from Shannon Epstein, use it daily!

With a subtitle of "100 Easy Recipes to Kick-Start Weight Loss" is this just a diet book? My answer is "NO"! Love the quote in the introduction:"You can't out-exercise a bad diet!"This recipe book is for those who want to eat healthier, maintain a good weight or lose some. Maybe, like the author, you are finding out that your metabolism is slowing down as age creeps on you. Shannon, faced with this dilemma, set out to figure a way to still eat yummy foods that also kept her weight in check. Are you confused about Ketogenic, Paleo and Whole30 diets? They are all explained here and whilst this book does not follow ANY of those three diets the author has noted when her recipes are compliant to any/all of the aforementioned so VERY helpful to the followers of the above.Certain foods do not do well in a slow cooker so make sure you check the list provided. There is even a sample 7 day meal plan included. This is an EASY read with the author coming across as being very conversational. There are EIGHT recipe sections:Breakfast and Brunch * Vegetables and Sides * Soups, Stews and Chili * Meatless and Seafood * Poultry * Beef, Pork and Lamb * Desserts and Sweet Treats * Broths, Stocks and SaucesEach recipe chapter contains a list of recipes and page numbers at the beginning. There are NO pictures, bar one, except at the beginning of each chapter. (This seems to be the trend now!) Try the Granola recipe on Page 18. Yum! Yum! Clear instructions are provided. Helpful tips are at the bottom along with nutritional information.Do you have a large family? Some of the recipes feature 8 servings! NOTE: There are a LOT of cheese recipes so would not recommend this for anyone that is dairy-free. Like curry? Try the Carribbean Chicken Curry recipe. Who likes Old Bay Seasoning? Learn how to make your own in this book! Calling all garlic lovers to eat the 40-Garlic-Clove Chicken! Erythritol is the sweetener used in recipes that require a little sweetness.ABSOLUTELY LOVE the broth, stocks and sauces chapter. If you only purchase this book for this chapter it will be worth it! Wow! Now you can quit buying the processed ones and easily make your own, much healthier ones.At the end of the book you will find measurement conversion charts. For those of you not aware of the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen are you will also find these two lists at the end. (Advice on which fruits and vegetables have the most/least pesticides.) This is followed by a recipe index and then an ingredient index. What this is, is a list to make looking up a specific ingredient contained in a recipe much easier. Say you are looking to cook with onions. Just head to 'O' and then 'Onions' and you will find all the recipes containing onions in one helpful list.I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. That has not influenced my review with the thoughts and opinions above being my own. Thanks, Liz

It was filled with a lot of relevant formation and didn't bore you with information that wasn't necessary. I think however that you should add a chapter which explains what plants grows best in the different types of systems. Other than that, a great read. Loved it.

Very open and up front on what is needed to create your own hydroponics garden. I look forward to creating my own. Still in getting the stuff for it.

Book feels ghost written by someone who has never had a hydroponic system. No lessons learned from experience or 'these are the problems i faced when starting' information.

This is really awesome book. If you are searching for ways to improve your health, a new hobby or just for a lifestyle change, Hydroponics: Think of it, “Wouldn’t it be great to have fresh herbs, fruits, and veggies year-round? Besides, no more weed-picking and hoeing. Discover what hydroponics is and how it can make your future a much healthier way of living. There is also a project listed that children can help with. Not only will your child benefit with the healthy nutrients provided in herbs, fruits, and vegetables; he/she will be a part of making it happen. So, please don't avoid the book!

This book is so lovely written. I have to take my time in reading this book. I'm glad that I got a chance to read this book.

Good info for getting started. The advice is learn by trial and error which is what gardening is. Good luck

This is a great book for beginners or those wanting to learn more about growing your own indoor garden using hydroponics. This is a step-by-step guide to hydroponic technology at home. Using this technology allows growing organic vegetables and fruits. I always dreamed of this, but now I can use it in practice. A very, very useful book for those who are not lazy and wish to make their life better.
