This book was a page-turner, and a fabulous read. This is an inspirational story that spans across all ages and audiences, from teens contemplating what their future can hold to retired Veterans or military servicemen & women who are exclusive in understanding the sacrifice and brotherhood that comes with war. If no one has ever heard of a PJ, this is the book explains the excruciating training and heroic rescues they are tasked with at a moments notice in combat and for civilians who need rescue. Thank you 212, and thank you Jimmy and your comrades who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that "others may live." I can't wait to get my paperback copies signed by both you and Don Rearden, as well as encourage all my family and friends to read about the life and adventures of Jim Settle!
Having read dozens of spec ops books, I was new and somewhat skeptical of the PJ's. I had heard good things about this book but much like the rest of our elite military, our country, media and government do a poor job of actually promoting true hero's...and let me tell you, PJ's are the real deal and absolutely are all hero's. "So that others may live" is essentially the motto or creed of the PJ's and this book does a phenomenal job of demonstrating that.Jimmy walks you through his personal story and his path to becoming a PJ. I particularly liked this book because you get as much detail and insight (as possible) into their community and what it takes to become a PJ. Jimmy has an incredible story of his own but what these guys go through is nothing short of BUD/S or Ranger School. In great detail, Jimmy takes you through the entire process, from qualifying, to actually earning his maroon beret.I read a review on here where someone had basically said that the book just explained the entire process and then barely had any detail on the war...well spoiler alert, Jimmy was critically wounded in his first tour so he didn't have the "chance" to do more overseas. This is no way takes away from the story or what he went through. I actually found this to be very gripping and thought provoking. I hate comparing our military to athletes because what our military goes through is significantly more difficult but there is a nice analogy here. Imagine training for something for your entire life, spending 5-6 grueling years of your life to finally achieve your goal, only to have it all taken away in your very first dance because terrorists and the extremism that exists in Iraq and Afghanistan. Jimmy is a true hero I think and its a big loss to not have someone like him still in Spec Ops "so that others may live".
Whether they want to own the title or not, PJs are heroes. Selflessly giving of themselves "so that others may live". Yet they don't get the attention the deserve. Everyone knows about SEALs, Rangers, and Green Berets. People call them heroes and role models. But everyone needs a hero, and those guys have PJs to look up to.
Wow! I couldn't put it down! Jimmy Settle is what is RIGHT with America. Strength, courage, humility, dedication. I literally read this book non-stop in two days! I haven't read a book this inspiring ever. I would give it six stars if I could. I bought extra copies to give my friends and family as gifts! Really Amazing young man.
Great book and interesting read . Anybody that is not familiar with the Air Force PJs, needs to read this book. It is hard to believe that anybody would put their selves through two years of this kind of training. The Navy Seals have taking a lot of the Lime light lately but the training of these PJs is longer and just as intense. I believe there is a lot higher failure rate and for good reason. America is blessed to have such men in our Special Forces. God Bless them all.
I have read many books by Navy SEAL and several on PJs, all of which seem to have something different to offer. Settle delivers by offering an even more unique perspective. The book offers important life lessons, plenty of humor and of course remarkable stories of courage. Never Quit is an appropriate title because this guy just finds a way to keep going despite the odds and circumstances. A very inspiring story.
This is a great read and an amazing story. From the beginning to the end, it was almost liking being in the pipeline with Jimmy. It is amazing what these special teams go through for training, but as Jimmy points out as bad as the training seems it still doesn't fully prepare you when you achieve your goal or go into battle. I admire Jimmy for keeping his focus on the goal despite physical and mental set backs. Jimmy is an example that having laser focus on your goal can get you through almost anything. It will most likely not be easy and there will be several obstacles in your way, but keeping your focus you can reach it. I recommend this book for anyone who is worried they can't reach their goal. Thank you Jimmy and thank you all who serve and do what you do.
My son saw this at his scholastic store at school and I told him we could find a used one on amazon for cheaper. I must say it's not for young readers as there are a lot of cuss words and sexual comments. I guess they make a youth version for scholastic. I had no clue. So I read it and whited out all the inappropriate parts so he could still read it- I must say it's an entertaining book.
