Greg Prato is a writer and journalist from Long Island, New York, whose writing has appeared in such renowned publications as Rolling Stone, Classic Rock, and Vintage Guitar. This chronicle of King's X is told entirely through interviews with the band, their peers, their business associates, their friends, and their families. There is no narrative text pulling it together, so no authorial voice. It's Doug, Ty, and Jerry telling you their story in their own words. It's magical. The amount of insight into the rise and eventual plateau of the band is staggering, as is documenting how they were taken advantage of by manager Sam Taylor — anyone looking to be in a band should read this, fan or not. If you are a fan, this is a must-buy. Every aspect of their career is covered, and every single song is discussed; all of their solo output is touched upon as well. There's not a lot of in-depth gear analysis except for a great section where Ty talks about his Strat Elite and his L5 amps, so if you're looking for that, you won't find it here. What you definitely will find are the likes of Mick Mars, George Lynch, Billy Corgan, Devin Townshend, all of Pantera, Billy Sheehan, Nuno Bettencourt, Jeff Ament, and more all singing the band's praises and wondering why they never made it big. And you'll be reminded of that as well. A great biography of one of the greatest rock bands ever. Go get it.

This book tells the entire Kings X story. It’s more of a stitched together interview (with band members, crew, friends and musicians who’ve been influenced by the band) hence the “Oral History” title. It may not go as in depth as some may like but I feel the bands voice is really represented here. Having a dedicated chapter for each album and song by song breakdowns is what in my opinion really compelled me to give it 4 stars. As Kings X is considered a “musicians” band it’s really fascinating to read how each song came about, their feelings about certain songs and certain albums. I often times found myself very surprised at their own level of self criticism. Doug (Dug) Pinnick especially is very critical of their (in my opinion) classic albums. I was surprised at the flaws he found in certain songs or even entire albums that I found myself in complete disagreement with (but perhaps that’s another reason their music is so good is that overly critical approach and striving to be better) Also, their own recollections back on why they never achieved the success everyone thought they were destined to achieve was very raw and honest. If you’re a huge Kings X then you should already have this, if you were a casual fan who maybe fell off after the “classic” period then I can’t recommend this book enough. It will give you insight into the bands process and a deeper appreciation for what they accomplished (as well as what they didn’t accomplish). This book made me go back and listen to music I love and is ingrained in my DNA with new ears and a new appreciation. If that isn’t reason enough to buy this book then I don’t know what else I can tell you.

Somehow, this book delivers far more than it promises.It is certainly the defining history of one of rock's most meaningful and consequential bands, presented in a way that one cannot debate the ultimate conclusion.It is an incredible autobiography of every recorded song the band has ever done. For those of us who find so much meaning and feeling in so many of their tracks that the rest of the world hasn't (quite yet) discovered broadly, this is like a musical therapy guide.It is an honest and respectful lionization of the almost peerless musical alchemy of these three guys, delivered by a stunning roster of influencers that have already broadly reached a rarefied position in the music world.It is proof that Greg Prato is a major dude for developing this project, and then getting out of the way to let the story tell itself (outside of his expert work on flow).And most fascinatingly to me, it shows that three humble guys whose hearts appear to have always been in the right place can be hypocritically written off by the very faith system they grew up in, due to their willingness to be real about their journey and struggles, instead of play-acting some kind of a spiritual caricature.If you love music, this is a must-read, as it's wonderfully entertaining.If you love a good authentic story, this is a must-read, as its deeply thought-provoking.And if you love King's X, this is a must-read, because as you already know, 'life is still of surprise...'(with mics pointed towards us, of course)

Not only is this book beautifully designed and constructed, but it is also an incredibly informative tome regarding one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time - the mighty King's X.Greg Prato is an experienced, masterful musical biographer. The cast of characters present in the book not only displays Greg's influence and reach, but it also shows the incredible amount of love and respect the guys of King's X hold in the hearts of many musicians who hit it big.If you have a mild amount of interest in the KX back story then read this book. If you don't know who they are then read this book. If you've never been to a KX show then sell whatever you can, buy a ticket, and make the pilgrimage.

While most rock band biographies are diluted by the author’s writing style, this book is told directly from the mouths of Dug, Ty, and Jerry - as well as many others who have played a role in the history of the band. As a fan, I’ve searched for revealing interviews with the band since discovering them back in the late 80’s, but most interviews simply scratched the surface or talked about gear. Thanks to the band and Greg Prato this book provides a valuable window into their world. If you’re a fan of King’s X then this is a must have.

If your teacher is having you buy the program that goes with this, don’t buy the book. Especially the ebook. The program has the book on it! I would say buy the hard copy book though as it would help with the projects to have an actual book, but it’s not necessary!

My wife likes the book but is seeing learning computers are a pain and a lot of work. Try to help the best I can but not an expert only hands on doing things and trying to teach her them but the technical jargon is a whole different language to her and me as well. Got it quickly and lucky was home to get it when delivered too many porch thieves doing it year round instead of just on Christmas like it used to be. They get away with it and the vendor delivery is not worth it any more such as USPS, FedEx and UPS all three are bad about dropping large boxes on the porch and ring bell once and if your not home or miss it then it is the consumers loss. Had a brush cutter stolen and wish had it so can ask for signature delivery to make sure we get it rather than the risk of it being stolen.

Is anyone having the following issue:10A Objectives 4,5,6 and 10B Objectives 7,8, and half of 9 are all repeating and I’m missing the second half of Objective 9 and all of Objective 10,11.Not sure if just my copy or production run problem. Page numbers change and a consistent, but with missing data, cannot complete assignment.

The entire time I was reading this compelling and evocative book, I kept thinking about how much fortitude Curt Warner and his wife, Ana, had to continue day after day in their struggles. Their twin sons, Christian and Austin were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) ...but only after many visits to the Pediatricians.Twenty years ago not much was known about ASD. Ana and Curt were on their own trying to figure out many things including whether or not diet could be a contributing factor and if there was any way to change the aggressive behavior of the twins. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated recently that 'one in sixty-eight children in America has ASD'. Such an incredible number and on the rise in recent years.While reading I kept trying to put myself into their environment for just one day. Absolutely would not be able to care for either of them unless I had lots of assistance. It would be a constant act of being vigilant just in trying to keep up with the behavior. And, patience, my word....what patience. And, for over twenty years, both parents have been supportive and loving.Love, a strong faith and respect...each of these contributed to the fortitude of both Curt and Ana. I can only imagine how it must have felt to remain positive for all of these years.A journey of so many, many small steps. Just imagine as a mother hearing your son say his first sentence when he was nine years of age.I will be thinking about the 'Warner Boys' for a long time in the future. Excellent, just excellent...Most highly recommended.

This is a no frills book showcasing a family who knew fame and heartbreak. Well written. it doesn't promise solutions but shows the grit and determination of love and learning. Any parent will appreciate the honesty of dealing with children who are incredibly difficult to raise. I live close to where they settled after Curt Warner left his career in sports. The dealership had a good reputation and the hard work by this couple offers some hope that people will learn from the stories of their lives. True life heros in every sense of the word.

Wow! This book needs to be given to ALL those who are raising a child with autism. Ana and Curt each take turns in sharing the story of their lives together with a little of their background thrown in also. Like most of us, they thought their marriage was going to be a fairy-tale. That soon changed when their firstborn (a boy) was stillborn. Then along came Jonathan, followed 18 months later by twins, Austin and Christian.Ana felt blessed to be a mom to three boys and was proud of her husband, Curt, who after being a running back with the Seahawks and Rams was now developing his own car dealership in Seattle. When the twins reached the age of two, Ana and Curt noticed that their personalities were changing. Despite reaching out for help and answers, Doctors were no help in those early years. Curt and Ana thought themselves to blame for the twins increasingly poor behavior. Finally in 1999, just before the twins turned 5, a diagnosis! Autism Spectrum Disorder aka ASD. A total shock.What follows is the story of therapies, food adjustments, destruction, endurance, exhaustion, faith, hope and so much more. This story brings the reader right up-to-date with the twins now in their 20's. Not only that but Curt and Ana adopted a little girl during all this.IMPORTANT to note that this is not a "fluffy", good feel story. This was HARD for these folks to write as they had to relive much of what they would rather forget. HOWEVER for those with younger autistic children, it can provide you with hope. NO, the twins have not been cured. NO, the boys cannot live independently BUT their parents have chosen to focus on their strengths rather than their weaknesses. Curt and Ana have also kept their faith and marriage alive. A truly AMAZING TRUE story that will bless all who read it. Although traumatic and heartbreaking at times, this book is an easy read. It feels as if Curt and Ana are sat talking with you. It is very well written and there are some family photos scattered throughout the book for you to enjoy. Curt and Ana are Christians and make no secret of that HOWEVER this book is not preachy. It is for folks from all walks of life and beliefs.HIGHLY recommended! I chose this book as my November First Read. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

I have several good friends with children who have various levels of autism. I thought this would be interesting to read about another family and their stories. I felt the writing was rather disjointed and at times confusing. I felt little to no real connection to Curt due too his writing style and constant talk of sports. Ana was better, but at times she seemed to ramble more than explain. Focus was lacking and certain things like the house destruction was discussed so often, though vaguely, and yet PANDAS was glossed over. That would have been a subject they could have expanded on. Same with their health and true emotional wellbeing. The comments about vaccines bothered me as well, as did the plug for Go Fund Me. Seems they are loving which I give them credit for. If I could do a half star this would get a 2.5

I give The Warner Boys only three stars not because it wasn't a beautiful story but because of the timing of the story. If this book was released twenty years ago when nobody understood what autism was, then I would be more impressed. I give credit to anyone who opens up and tells the world of their personal life experiences especially when it has so much potential to help others experiencing the same challenges. But no matter how much I enjoyed this book, I just can't justify a five star rating, as so many of the reviews I read proclaimed. These Kindle First books are available to us, the reader, to read and review in advance so as to inform others readers of the quality and context in which they are spending their hard earned money. In my opinion, most readers are handing out five star ratings like candy on Halloween.

This book was interesting and the topic was fascinating. However, this book is extremely repetitive (just imagine if I wrote that exact sentence eight more times throughout this review, that would give you an idea on how repetitive this book is). It also suffers greatly for not having been edited by someone who actually understands proper grammar and spelling in the English language. While you can figure out what the authors are talking about, there exist many situations where you will stop and say "wait, what?" due to misspelled words (sometimes the words are spelled correctly but it is not the word that they intended to use). There are also many situations where punctuation is omitted or randomly inserted.Overall, I gave three stars due to how interesting the topic is. -1 star for repetition and -1 star for atrocious grammar and spelling.

Firstly, kudos to Kevin Lee Nelson for his paranormally perfect cover design. It is visually weird, intellectually enticing and poetically evocative of the 1903 time-frame of the bizarre story. I have NOT seen a cover to a book quite as gripping as this in some time.As to the innards of the book itself, there are typos and words misused throughout the text. Pages 32 and 37 have 'severed' where the correct word should be 'served.' Elsewhere, 'subjugate' is used when the right word would have been 'sublimate.' On page 213 'then' is missing the 'n'. And so forth. Given three authors and a probable proof-reader or more, such gaffs should have been caught before publication. Perhaps the second printing will be more blemish-free. The book also is rather clumsy in starting-up. The chronology of events is a virtual reprint of the actual 1903 newspaper article that told the tale of terror in the first place. And given that ALL there really is to the story of the Van Meter Visitor is contained in that original article and a few subsequent ones, the book would have been much more effective by starting with those news articles themselves. The cataloging of the witnesses to the alleged encounters with the Visitor also comes at us too soon and in a very confusing way. Mention is made a couple of times of a "Handsome Bachelors" group photo that includes a few of the main players in the strange story - yet one never learns what the group portrait was all about or what it may have hinted at as far as a possible practical jokers club as well as its being a 'handsome bachelors' grouping. Nor do we see that complete photo. The photo of a group of folks used for the History chapter is not even identified. A chapter number for a simplistic map of 'Where is Van Meter?' also seems more appropriate for a high school term paper than a polished probing into the paranormal. So the book begins bumpily, seemingly ineptly in many ways.But then the book takes wing and soars. Somewhat like the Visitor itself! Yes, Lewis/Voss/Nelson approach the mystery from all avenues and cast brilliant light on all of the possible explanations as to what may have happened over the course of those long-ago fall nights in 1903. Every angle - from hoax to UFOs to misidentification of large birds to mass hysteria to interdimensional, ultraterrestrial causes - is admirably and astutely explored. The breadth of speculation in this - the heart of the book - is intellectually stimulating and mind-boggling. The ill effects of the awkward entry into the story and the irritating typos and misused words are vastly minimized by the panoramic sweep of the topics so admirably addressed by our three adventurous authors.There is an Achilles heel is the entire tale, however, though it is no fault of the authors. And that is the lack of any testimony from the main witnesses to the alleged event other than mention of their names in the original news article written by one H.H.Phillips - who was, by the way, warned against in an article printed anonymously two days after the story first was printed. Unlike stories such as that of the UFO crash in Roswell, wherein tales were told by primary witnesses to their families and friends, handed down through the generations, nothing like this seems to have happened amongst the citizenry of Van Meter. Surely, if the story were true, one of the many witnesses would have told his children or grandchildren - or written it in a diary or readdressed it in further newspaper articles down the years. Surely something other than the incriminating silence that apparently swallowed the story after its initial run in the press. The fact that a story ran two days after the first telling of the tale, wherein the folks of Van Meter are "indignant" over what they felt was "pure fabrication" and "the height of foolishness" doesn't help the story gain legs - or wings! On page 15 of this book Van Meter's current library director informs our authors that "the legend of the mysterious beast is still alive among the rural community of Van Meter, and even though many of the specifics of the events have been all but forgotten, much of the original tale had been passed down from generation to generation." Yet nothing of this enticing claim pans out within the pages of the book itself. The story truly begins and ends with one man - H.H. Phillips. The rest is...silence.The closing contemplations of the book hinting at the current residents of Van Meter "looking to embrace its strange monster history" can make one further doubt the veracity of the entire strange saga. There may not be any monsters in them thar hills...but there is undoubtedly money! T-shirts with attached bat-wings, weird postcards and whatnot - the big business of ballyhooed Festival Days is already apparently in the minds of the locals! Yes, anyplace and anywhere can cash in on its local legends - be they real or fake - and party like there's no tomorrow. I truly wish Van Meter all the prosperous best. I only wish there were more to the story than the enigmatic H.H. Phillips.All in all, THE VAN METER VISITOR is a completely compelling and eminently entertaining excursion into the world of the weird. A perfect book for this Halloween time of year!

The writing style is fluid, the topic is intriguing and I'd recommend this book to friends and family. One of the more unique finds in terms of books that I've come across.

First of all, I'm guessing that the editing issues that previous reviewers complained about have been resolved. I saw very few grammar or spelling problems, and I'm usually pretty picky about that.The writing was decent but I knew nothing, and felt nothing, for the characters and that ruined the whole book for me. The writer gave virtually no insight into any of the characters, certainly not the main ones, and other than the fact that *POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT* Michael was young, lazy, and probably a thief, if not worse, and his girlfriend was hiding things from him and was possibly a murderer, I have no idea what these characters are like.If I can't relate to the characters, I sure am not going to care about what happens to them. They sell each other out first chance they get, and I just didn't care what happened to them. The most developed character was an odd, hippie Vietnam vet who spent most of his time hanging upside down from the ceiling with magic markers. I certainly didn't care about that character either.The plot required a total suspension of belief, and although the action was good, and it was not a totally boring book, there just wasn't any way a plot like that was believable.This book had potential but I was very disappointed in the finished product.

I made it to chapter 19 before I called it a day. Achingly slow pacing and zero character development made me want to pull my eyelashes out. If I don't know and care about the characters, then I can't care what happens to them. The chapters are short and end just when things are heating up. I understand wanting to end a chapter with a cliff hanger, but you have to actually develop the chapter first in order to keep the reader engaged.Mr. Trafford would do well to employ a solid editor who can teach him the basics of story flow, pacing, plot development, and character development. The main character is about as bland as a Nilla Wafer, which is sad because Mr. Trafford isn't without talent. With some pointers, he could develop into a very good writer.

The bright side of this novel is that moves right along. One things leads to another, and keeping the events going requires writing ability.The other side is that character motivations don't add up to a coherent plot. For more details and harsher description than I will use, see H. Hanford's one-star review.Like a character in a horror film, Michael continually walks into situations that made me mutter, "You moron."Michael, his sidekick Kermit, and Andie are all wasting away with booze and marijuana in Mexico as Andie's beach resort slides toward bankruptcy. I've got nothing in particular against that lifestyle, but it does not inspire confidence in the responsibility of these three, either.Among the motivations that do not add for me -- and this is the short list --1. Michael forgives Andie for being poised to throw him to the authorities to decrease her own jail time.2. Michael returns to Mexico, knowing he will be pursued there.3. His boss's secretary prefers to commit murder rather than perhaps attend law school herself, because she believes her contributions to the super-star legal firm have been overlooked.4. Isn't it time for someone to perform an intervention for Kermit to get him some much-needed help on the VA Bill?Hanford's list is even longer.There nothing particularly bad about the writing; I am so used to spelling errors for homonyms and other typos in free Kindle books that I am no longer bothered by them.There is nothing particularly lyrical or evocative about the writing, either.As one of my middle-school teachers used to say, "You pays your money and you takes your choice."So when I pay nothing for a book, I've made a choice. I commend the writers who make their work available to me, because I get exposed to many newcomers to the novel trade I might otherwise not read.

The best thing about this book is that it's written in the style of John Grisham. The storyline held my interest throughout. Characters were filled out as to their backgrounds and motivations. I would have rated this book with 4 stars except for one thing: sloppy proofreading. I can overlook a few things, but there were so many errors, it was distracting. Other than that, it was a good read that I would recommend to others.

This book appears to be a printed version of a web site, with smallish grainy photos and maps that are difficult to make out. It reads like someone's travelogue, and has no information on restaurants, or places to stay. It was not useful to me in arranging a trip to Martinique.

Decent guide to the island.

The book was not very user friendly and did not identify the main sights. It did not help with planning itinireraries. You would probably need to have another guide book to have all the information you would need.

Insultingly basic; provides no more information on diagnosis and treatment than any given patient is likely to receive from their physician, or indeed a cursory investigation using google or bing. Contains virtually no information for patients diagnosed with Stage IV, and seems to serve more as an advertisement for the associated clinic than an actual resource manual for the afflicted, their family, friends or caregivers. It is sparse and short, and devotes far too much of what little it contains to self-congratulatory nonsense on behalf of the writer's clinic. It uses atypical diagnostic categories, and is absolutely lousy with, again, what I would consider to be attempts at advertisement rather than advisement.I strongly recommend the latest edition of Dr. Susan Love's book, or a copy of the Mayo Clinic's publication even though it is out of date. None of these provide enough information for the patient diagnosed with Stage IV, rarer forms of the disease or for those readers who are most strongly scientifically inclined and medically experienced but Love's book eapecially will be a bastion of information covering the basic essentials up through a resonable degee of technicality. In addition both Love's book and the Mayo's are far better resources for the various psychological and interpersonal ramifications of diagnosis, both for the patient and their carers. They are fundamental resources I would recommend in a heartbeat to 99% of people finding their lives intimately invaded by that spectre, breast cancer. Better resources are desperately needed for those enduring late stage diagnosis, however no matter the stage you will still derive *some* benefit from both Love's book and the Mayo Clinic's.It is worth noting as well that this "manual" is produced to insultingly poor standards - multiple pages were totally illegible; it is printed in the cheapest fashion possible with no quality control, to the extent that you may be deprived of what little value it may have potentially provided you; the sole page devoted to my mother's (not uncommon) form of the disease was so badly misprinted that virtually nothing could be discerned. It was far from the only page in totally illegible condition.I have rarely felt so angry at a book; but to write and publish such low quality insubstantial rubbish as this and charge actual bloody money for it seems to me to cross the line into predation against people made vulnerable by the terror of recent diagnosis.

This book is clear, informative and comprehensive of the many Qs a new cancer patient will ask. Dr. Link is insightful, intelligent and although clearly a skilled oncologist, writes from a human and intuitive standpoint, making what is a scary diagnosis an easier journey. It describes each kind of breast cancer, different treatment options, nutrition, exercise and the things you should be asking your team. We have recommended this book a few times. It is unfortunate that so many are afflicted with breast cancer, but at least there s a book like this for those newly diagnosed.

In this book, Dr. Link covers everything a new patient needs to know about the science of breast cancer, including breast cancer types and the appropriate treatments for each. The book is extremely educational and provides the knowledge a patient needs to achieve optimal care working with their medical team. The information provided is based on scientific studies and research. The 6th edition includes the most recent developments in breast cancer care. I highly recommended this book. Really helpful book explaining what you need to know when you are first diagnosed. I found myself reading and re-reading some chapters many evenings.

excellent book with all the clear facts about breast cancer survival.

A cancer diagnosis is devastating, but an earlier version of this book (16 years ago) gave me the knowledge I needed to forge the best possible course of treatment with my physicians. Making informed decisions is key to getting the most positive outcomes. Also, the book led me to its author, and I was fortunate that Dr. Link became my oncologist. The 6th edition presents the state of the art in cancer treatment in concise, accessible, and well written prose. As a survivor, I’m naturally interested in current cancer research and treatment. I have given previous editions of this book to newly diagnosed friends and acquaintances. I will continue recommending this new cutting-edge edition.
