I found this book to be extremely informative. It is written in a clear, engaging style that makes it a pleasure to read. The examples are well constructed, relevant to real world applications, and thoroughly explained. The essential bits of code are highlighted for quick reading. The most irritating thing about web development is cross-browser support, and authors do a great job to making this less intimidating and point readers to libraries to abstract away the differences. Also covered are related JavaScript XML, XPath, XSLT support, web services, RSS/Atom.PHP is the primary server side language used, though they chose .NET/C# for creating a web service. Microsoft's .NET web service tools are excellent, but I would have liked it if the authors had rounded this out with giving the basics of creating a web service using open source solutions.If you want to learn Ajax techniques and related technologies, this book is well worth your time and money.

This is a great book -- from chapter 3 onward. :-) Otherwise, I would give it only one star.Unfortunately, the first 2 chapters are mostly CIPU (clear if previously understood). And, if you don't get a clear understanding of AJAX basics (which you will not get with this book) then the rest of the book is not on topic.The part of chapter 2 that deals with hidden frames and iFrames was interesting, but obsolete. (Does anybody use frames anymore?) After laboring thru 15 tedious pages you finally find out that this is not the way to do things (as though anybody would these days!). You are then hit with the fact that you must use the authors' zXml library from here on to get things to work. That's just great! Nothing like introducing some 3rd party proprietary confusion to add to an already confusing topic.As with another AJAX book I have reviewed ("AJAX In Action") these guys really know their stuff. But they forgot that the average reader who buys their book wants to know about AJAX first, not about Comet, mashups and JSON. The blurb on the back cover is misleading. In answer to the topic, "Who this book is for" it states:"This book is for web developers who want to enhance the usability of their [web] sites and applications. Familiarity with JavaScript, HTML and CSS is necessary, as is experience with a server-side language such as PHP or a .NET language."Well, I am quite experienced with most of the above topics, but still got very little in the way of how AJAX actually works from this book. This book should be re-titled, "Professional AJAX For The EXPERIENCED AJAX Developer."

Wed 10/03/2007 5:15 pm. I'm not sure who writes these positive reviews, but an early example in the book ("The Hidden Frame Technique", starting on page 21) is obviously broken. The book shows "HiddenFrameExample1.htm" in an illustration but there is no such file in the ProAjax2ePHP.zip file downloaded from wrox. Judging by quotes on the internet probably from the first edition, I'd guess the actual file is probably GetCustomerData.php (?) but whether it is or not, that file has an obvious syntax error, missing paren in line 12 "if (is_numeric($sID) {". Of course if I were a php/ajax expert all this would be blindingly obvious; but I'm not, that's why I bought the book. I can't say I'm optimistic about the remainder of the text.

This is a great book but entirely irrelevant in todays world. The libraries and methods outlined here are outdated. With modern javascript frameworks like jQuery and Prototype there is, in my humble opinion, certainly no need to delve into the techniques of this book.

The book does a good job academically of showing how Ajax has evolved (itself a debatable topic) and how it is used in modern-day applications. The book doesn't marry the reader to any one particular web development framework, effectively citing examples in PHP, .NET, and JavaServer Pages. Practically, the authors exhibit a proper mix of (X)HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Dynamic HTML and XmlHttpRequests, showing how the technologies are blended for developing next-gen UIs.There are great discussions of advanced concepts like JSON, REST, and SOAP-based web services and how Ajax is incorporated into them. Also, coding to allow cross-browser compatibility is stressed throughout the book, particularly in instantiating an XMLHTTP object across IE, Firefox, Mozilla and Safari. The authors' zXml and XParser are cited as two of several third-party libraries to seamlessly pull this off.Some gems that I found within the book include Chapter 8 - "Web Site Widgets", which is very helpful, giving practical demonstrations and usable code for several Ajax-driven mini-applications we could all use in our web projects. Chapter 7's case study of a Google Suggest-style autocomplete text box was very elegant, using JSON as an alternative to XML's typically verbose payload. Chapter 2 - "Ajax Patterns" also abstracts many of the features common to apps using Ajax (i.e., polling, autosave, incremental updating). All are well done and greatly appreciated.Syntactically, the authors' programming style is very clever. While not exhaustively described, the book shows how to feign object-oriented programming in client-side JavaScript, making liberal use of such time-saving coding tricks like faux classes, inline function definitions and prototypes.In criticism, the one chapter I found to be a letdown was Chapter 5 - "RSS/Atom", mainly because I'm very involved with work in that space. A terse description of content syndication is presented, but then followed exclusively by an analysis the FooReader.NET web-based RSS aggregator app. It's nice, but doesn't take a more holistic view of how Ajax is being used elsewhere. I would have also liked to see examples in emerging platforms, specifically Ruby on Rails and the Ajax support built directly into that web framework.But overall this is a very good introductory read for experienced programmers wanting to get up to speed on the next big thing in advanced web UI development. I'm a better, more aware, more prepared developer for having read it.

I haven't got a chance to go through all details yet, but looks pretty good so far.

A young adult time travel novel you say. No doubt it will be simplistic even juvenile. It is bound to tread familiar ground. These statements could not be farther from the truth. In fact, the only clue to this being written for a younger audience is the complete lack of expletives. I actually found this refreshing and not for prudish reasons but for the author's need to be more selective in word choice.So many aspects of this book work. The plotting is fresh, intriguing and entertaining throughout. There are layers of decent complexity and surprises that run to the very last page. We follow teenager Jack Lund back in time. Jack is on a mission to right a horrible wrong. There is such grit behind this premise that, once again, the YA classification does not seem accurate. I must admit that I rushed the book. It felt as if I was flipping pages like I did in my youth when when a new comic arrived on the stands. Hautman gives the reader, regardless of age, credit for their intellect. This was fun, fast and entertaining. I look forward to rereading it in time. By the way, after finishing it I read more about the author and love his quirky biographies on Amazon and his website.

Plot/Description: 4 StarsThe plot was very interesting. Having the protagonist be a teenager who time travels at a young age was an interesting twist. The issue of not being able to travel through time because it would cause paradox was handled in an intelligent manner that was very believable. The storyline never dragged and continuously forwarded the plot in different ways.There was one major issue in the middle of the book that caught my attention. The main character is assumed to be dead at one point and, while I knew he could not be, it was never explained how he survived. I'm assuming this is not a spoiler simply because, as I said, I didn't think the main character would die only halfway through the novel. So, I never once thought he was dead, but I did wonder how the author was going to 'save him.' Unfortunately, it was never revealed. This anticipation with no payoff took away a lot of my enjoyment of the second half of the novel.The story was fast paced and kept me enthralled throughout. The ending was satisfying, if a little creepy.Character Development: 5 StarsThe main character had terrific depth evoking plenty of empathy. While not without his flaws, he was still a strong, likable person.The rest of the characters were also developed nicely. Each was unique with their own personality and voice.Writing Style: 5 StarsOn the description page, I saw that this was a Young Adult novel. However, it is imminantly suitable for adult reading. I would even venture to say that the description is incorrect. The tone and sentence structure seemed geared more for adults. The descriptions were extremely vivid. The dialogue was great, not stilted like I have noticed in many YA novels.Editing/Formatting: 5 StarsBoth were of professional quality.Rating: PG-15 for Violence and Language

This book was fantastic! I'm a lover of all types of time travel books and I must say this has been one of the best. I will not go into plot because it will just give too much away. Suffice to say there are enough twists here to keep you guessing. Just when you say what the..? something comes around the corner that will make you stop for a second and say whoa now I get it( I think). A wonderful historical time travel mindbender.

I read this book in high school and it has always been one of my favorites. I would love to see this turn into a movie.

I usually read Pete Hautman for is poker and casino themed books, and I almost didn't buy this one. I'm glad I did! It's a great story that keeps you engaged. I had a hard time putting it down.

Mr. Was was interesting from beginning to end. It was difficult to follow in some parts because it jumped back and forth in time, but the premise is intriguing and the ending was satisfying.

He tells the story with a reality that is magnificent. I really felt like this is what dogs must think and feel. A story told from the perspective of a dog about loss and grief was especially moving. While there are a variety of books on the loss of a pet, this is the first book where I saw the story from the other side, and had to stop and think that dogs feel a sense of loss and sadness when they lose people they love the same as people grieve at the loss of a dog. It is the absolute perfect balance - I laughed, I cried, and my heart enveloped a dog named Wrigley. Bravo, Mr. Asher! I can't wait to read your next book.

“All That Ails You” is a heartwarming story narrated by Wrigley, a dog who you instantly come to love and understand, and his adventures as he warms his way into the hearts and lives of the staff and residents of the assisted living home where he has happily landed.The sign of a good book is when you find yourself still in the story and involved with the characters long after you stop reading. This is one of those books. It is elegant in its simplicity and an absolute pleasure to read.

After experiencing the final time with both parents, this story made me feel and realize the love and support that a dog can give to seniors who often feel that they have been deserted by the ones they need most. It has been a depression lifting experience to have canine visitors in these last "homes."This story presented from a dog's perspective is both heart warming and heart-breaking. It is filled with accounts of the positive and negative aspects of being with a dog attempting to both live with seniors and be a companion to them.It shares warm, loving experiences, difficult situations, and helped me deal with so many unsolved, remaining issues of being a child and family member filled with grief, regrets, sadness, buried feelings of shame, and such intense feelings of loss.This story presents a different and positive view of love and warmth at the end of life.

Set in an assisted living home, Wrigley the mutt dog, helps the residents and owners deal with life's troubles. The book is narrated by Wrigley so it's all from the dog's point of view. He has his favorite residents, knows who to sit by at Bingo (treats just fall on the floor) and helps everyone deal with the ups and downs of aging. Made me cry so many times I almost wished I had picked a different book to read but it was uplifting at the same time. Well done!

Wrigley the dog began his life being shifted from pillar to post until the Peterson's adopted him as the care dog in the assisted living home they owned. And does he ever fit in! Like Garth Stein's great novel about Enzo ("The Art of Racing in the Rain"), Wrigley tells a marvelous story, revealing his thoughts, his feelings and the joy of being in a dog in a place where most everyone likes him, and the one person who seems not to, finally gives in. That said, Wrigley is a "keeper", and will be for anyone who reads about him. This book belongs on a best-seller list, and I hope it ends up there. Buy a copy or two or three for gifts for this Christmas season. Children will love it, and so will adults.

Wrigley is the house dog at the SunRidge Assisted Living home. In his short life, he's lived in several different homes, none of which had been all that happy. So when he came to SunRidge, his prayers had been answered, a soft cozy bed, an endless supply of rubs behind his ears and peanut butter treats simply for the asking.I toyed with the idea of simply not writing a review of this book. I don't have a feeling about it one way or the other. I'm too addicted however, to the process to stop and I enjoy adding my two cents worth. In some small way I feel I'm helping not only people who are considering reading the book but the authors too, to know how readers are reacting to their work.What's not to love about a dog story? Nothing really. This is a very simple story, told from the dog's point of view. He's smart in a dog kind of way. But the story telling from a human point of view lacked excitement, color and tension. Wrigley is a sweet guy, but that's all I can say.

What a truly heartwarming and enjoyable story. It made me smile but also brought tears to my eyes. The characters were all loveable, even old Walter. Wrigley's love for the residents and their love for him is priceless. I highly recommend this book, you won't be disappointed.

First,I relate to Walter because of age and attitude. Second, when I look at my "fur kid", Sherman T (T for Tank), I see a lot of Wrigley. Always there for me, glad to see me when I come in. Sherman has a "kid"door so I don't have to let him out, he comes and goes at will. He has a thing for tissue, taking a box at a time out thru his door. He takes the tissue out and shreds the box! Then "says he's sorry" but does it again if given a chance.Yes, only a dog lover could really appreciate this book! Well written and sensitive!

I had grown up in a community that often made the religious statement, " in all things, give thanks" but I had never seen such a bold acknowledgment around what must have been a very difficult time for our author.So it was settled, this book is not about feel-good tips and motivation. It's about doing the work even with your issues. This year, many of my friends will receive a copy.ear, anxiety, and doubts,

I LOVE this book!!!! I lend my 2 copies out all the time and refer friends to it as often as they will listen. Using the truths in this book I powerfully built my faith and vision I went for a dream...changed our financial situation and bought our dream home on 5 acres. I LOVE my home and especially my new awareness and knowledge of the laws and truths so beautifully taught in this book. Thank you Thank you Householder.

I liked it but it was similar to her other book The Jackrabbit Factor, but minus the rabbits. The inspiration for her books is Bob Proctor's book You Were Born Rich. She tells us her life changed after attending one of his seminars. I plan to re-read Hidden Treasures now that I have read You Were Born Rich, which I LOVED reading! Basically these books tell you to change your attitude and you will change your life. There are lots of books out there to lend inspiration...Think and Grow Rich was mentioned in Bob Proctor's book. But I think an underlying theme could be that you don't necessarily need to pursue wealth to be rich. A happy person is "rich" no matter how much wealth he/she accumulates.

These days it seems "everyone" is either writing or reading books on the Law of Attraction! I know I've read more than one, but this one answered a question I've had unanswered till now. In it, Leslie Householder reveals what to do when you have fear, anxiety, and doubts, expecially when bad things happen. How do we not create from fear and anxiety when we have those times of, quite understandably, feeling fear and anxiety?I won't give away the answer because everything Leslie has to say about the Law of Attraction makes it worth the purchase! In addition, if you are either Mormon or Christian and want some Biblical references for the Law of Attraction, Leslie provides that. As she herself says, you do not have to appreciate the spiritual perspective to enjoy the benefits of reading her book. However, if spirituality is part of your life, I recommend her take on the Law of Attraction. Especially the answer to the question about how to handle fear and doubt!

This is a delightfully different retelling of King Author for me. I haven't read anything quite like it before. I loved the ways in which the legend is woven into a different tapestry of events. The knights are not what they usually are and most of the story revolves around a daughter of Guinevere. If you liked the stories of King Author and are a fan of history then you will love this book. If you are not, then you will still love the story.

I received an ARC from the Author and I'm really glad I did. I'm trying to avoid spoilers in my review of a book that is full of action even if it's not a huge tome.This was a fantastic read and a play on the King Arthur legends. We start out with Blanche and some of the minor characters of the legends but this is not a minor story and I look forward to reading what might happen next to Blanche and the other people in the story. Everyone is well developed, including people we may or may not see again in other books.This is part one of more but reads as a full story, and while it ends with a hint of dangers to come, it is not a cliffhanger ending. I look forward to part 2 and other works by the author.

An Arthurian tale which crosses over into 1900, when a young woman discovers she is, in fact, the heir of King Arthur, who was sent from ancient Britain through a portal for her own safety.It reminded me in sort parts of the recent movie The Kid who Would be King, with Giants and errant knight chasing fighting characters in the modern world with courage, heroism and a touch of fantasy and romance thrown in.The book is also clearly immersed in the Literature of the Arthurian legends: with Tennyson and Chesterton quoted at the beginning of the chapters, as well as some older authors, such as the Tudor period writer Edmund Spenser.Recommended for lovers of historical fiction, fairy tales and good old fashioned adventure yarns. This is the first part of the longer story retold as a trilogy- and I get the feeling its just about to get really intense.So open the door and travel to Camelot today, to step into the richness and drama of the glorious Medieval tales retold with an interesting modern spin. Also a great taster to anyone who is not familiar at all with the legends.I agreed to be an early reader of this title. Wow! Talk about losing track of time. Suzannah totally rocked this fantastic storyline and spinning plot with on point realism. She pulls all the emotions you feel and intensifies them through you front and center. Man, twixt and twined and put through the wringer with a plethora of events that bring this bad boy roaring to life flawlessly. This little jewel is as riveting as it is captivating. All the drama, fear, danger and uncertainty grabs your attention and holds it from start to finish with your total focus on this page turning dynamo while holding you on a razors edge. One wild rollercoaster ride full of non-stop action, intrigue and suspense make for one incredible experience. The characters are complex, believable and so realistic with such depth and individuality it feels like you can just reach out and touch them. It was a joy to witness as the characters grow into the roles they were made for. The scenes are so graphically detailed and descriptive it's like being transported to ground zero with them. Remarkable job Suzannah, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advanced Reader Copy of this story.

It made me laugh, and it brought tears to my eyes. I've read the full trilogy under its novel-length title PENDRAGON'S HEIR, and I can tell you, if you love Arthurian legend and retellings, or simply adventurous fantasy written in a rich classic style, you'll love this story and will probably want to grab the next installment right away!

Pendragon's Heir, which was one of my favorite reads of 2018, is being re-released as a 3-part trilogy. There is a LOT going on in this story, but it is all pulled together amazingly well. Once this book entered our house, it skyrocketed up our charts for favorite fantasy novels! I had always been a little disappointed with the way the Arthur stories ended; but Ms. Rowntree does a really admirable job of giving the story a new twist, and I'd recommend this to anybody interested in Arthurian legend or Christian fiction, done top-hole. The writing style is very engaging, the atmosphere is thrilling, and the story is a beautifully woven tapestry. This is still our favorite Rowntree book so far-- here's to the rest of the road!And one thing more-- don't judge a book by its cover, or by its Amazon description. There's more to the story than meets the eye.
