This book is a masterpiece. As the simple title implies, this massive volume contains just about everything known about lasers up to the 1980s. One would think though, that such an ambitious text would inevitably leave certain subjects under-developed, but every page of the book emanates the care Siegman took in carefully thinking through each explanation and derivation to teach the reader. As one reads through the text chapter by chapter, the book also incorporates the modern (as of the 1980s, but much is still relevant) context of parameters and physics being discussed. For example, every section in the chapter on amplification cites the real measurements and performance of Nd:Glass, Ti:Sapph etc. gain mediums to really cement what the alphas and lambdas mean in reality. The meat of the exposition is superb, as Siegman's approach is to not only explain each concept thoroughly as they are introduced, but then double back towards the end of the chapter to insert his own personal insights and interpretations that are always illuminating. The book is so well done, he even writes a few sentences about the references included at the end of each section. It's a shame that Siegman passed away, since in the 30 years after its publication the field of lasers has advanced by leaps and bounds. I wouldn't trust anyone else to add to Siegman's book though, since his writing was truly one of a kind.

Most undergraduate and graduate classes use this book and it is an absolutely amazingly well-written book. I remember as an undergrad. this book was a little confusing but now with more experience in the field of laser and optics I see why this book is so highly regarded. The book hasn't been updated so its missing some more recent topics in lasers but it is still an amazing book. Check out Silfvast and Demtroder for other books that are also well written and offer some expounding on some topics that this book is weak on.

The author has a real talent for explaining. The book is surprisingly well written for a scientific reference book. Years after I followed the class where this book was used, it still sits on my shelf and I refer to it regularly for my work.

This remarkable text is a wonderful introduction to the world of lasers, especially good for undergraduate courses, particularly for engineers.The basic principles and practice are explained with extraordinary clarity, and without any significant mention of quantum mechanics. The main weakness of the book is the lack of information on semiconductor laser diodes - so central these days to many branches of laser engineering.For those wanting a more advanced undergraduate - or physics-based text - an excellent complementary text to Siegman's is Orazio Svelto's 'Principles of Lasers'.Siegman's book is an excellent engineering text - a terrific introduction for anybody who is new to lasers.

It is a great test book for one to have if they want to learn about lasers. It goes thru every detail, it is a lot of information to digest but Seigman puts it better then anyone else that I know of. Many other physics and laser text books quote Seigman's Lasers, so why not get the source that everyone trusts?

Very well written and relate-able! Red Key Revolution was an enjoyable read with a powerful message. It's a great reminder/encouragement for all stages of life. Highly recommend! (It arrived while my mother-in-law was in town and she finished it while my husband and I were out on date night! haha)

Extremely encouraging and convicting. Jordan allows us into his life story through humble transparency. He shows us how through a simple item we all have and use every day, his young motivation was turned from SELF gratification into an OTHER'S centered focus. And it all came as a simple challenge with a "red key" early in his life. Little did Jordan know that the effect and power of that decision would be massive in his life. I know in our day, this story is a much needed message. I look forward to implementing red keys with my kids after they read it. Thanks Jordan for sharing a great message. It's refreshing to read a self-motivational book that's not going on and on about material success but rather significance, personal intrinsic values and how all that helps you build a legacy and lasting relationships.Thank you Netgalley for the eARC. Better yet, I love how the author used a simple mechanism to expound on such a deep topic.

This book was just the right balance of info/stories, and I LOVE all the practical hand/heart sections at the end of each “cut.” It emphasizes a mindfulness in all things we do and how we powerfully impact others whether we are aware or no (so we better do better!) It flew by and yet was so dense with golden nuggets that I’ll have to re-listen to the audiobook and take notes!! I really loved how Jordan details his shift in motivation from self to service- while at the same time continuing to set powerful goals in pursuit of being ones best self. A must read/listen!!!

I was very happy to read this book, a totally real yet decent book. It's not full of swear words, sex, crushes, or other "junk" that Junior High books are full of. And it is very colorful and appealing to girls. It is rare to find a fiction book published recently for teenagers that's decent!The story is about a girl who eats and eats candy after candy. (How can she ever eat all those bags under her bed??!) Then she is somewhat forced to go to a weight group, where she bonds with the only other teenager there, a guy. At the same time she begins exercising in secret, changing her eating habits, and getting into swimming. This has wonderful results for her, especially when the guy she likes shows her attention!

this book is great! i love this series of how maggie bean overcame her weight problem. if you buy this book you won't be disappointed. if you are a guy i would be skeptical about reading some parts, but overall it is a wholesome book for ages 8-14. (p.s. if you loved this book you will LOVE "Models don't eat Chocolate Cookies"!)

Maggie Bean is on the plump side with self esteem so low that she avoids looking into mirrors. Every week she sneaks into the drug store while her mother does the grocery shopping to buy that weeks supply of chocolate and candy. She realizes that being fat isn't what she wants. What she wants is to be popular, pretty, and thin. She thinks trying out to become a Water Wing is the way to get there.I really loved this book. Whether your a bit too plump or on the skinnier side, I think there's a message for it you.

this is a great book. its very interesing to read about maggie's struggle for losing wieght and to get her crush to notice her. i highly recommend this book.

I love this book. My kids love this book. It is an adventure story that requires using some creative puzzle solving to figure out the puzzles presented to the reader. Excellent variety of puzzles that require a bit of lateral thinking. The characters are great, and overall the story is just wonderful. I truly hope there will be more like this to come!

My son devoured this book. The story is captivating, like a mix between Indiana Jones and The Goonies, and the puzzles are great fun. I was planning to let him read one chapter a day (it is a chapter book) but he ended up reading several. He is not a big reader but the mix between two-three pages of story followed by a picture mystery did the trick.

This book follows the escapades and investigations of Timmi, Marvin, & Lilli as they search for the Star Runner and its hidden treasures. The format is much like many children's chapter books - but each chapter of story is followed by a full-page illustration that is the puzzle-solving part of the book. The clues in the text cue what you should be looking for in the illustration to solve the puzzle for that chapter.Honestly, I thought this might be a bit much for my 6-YO, but he was very engaged and very good at picking out hidden clues in the illustrations. Only on some of the harder ones did I need to provide some additional clues for him. And only on the hardest puzzles did I need to refer to the clues at the end of the book (designed to be read in a mirror).We both ended up having great fun with this, and can't wait till the next installment. If I have one reservation, it's that the re-reading potential is lower due to having solved the puzzles already.

I was expecting a book where you read the chapter, then you choose an outcome and it directs you to another section of the book based on that decision. This is not one of those books. I think it is classified as "solve-them-yourself" books, due to it having follow up questions following each chapter to get children to really think about what they've just read and inspire deeper reading. Still a good book, but I was hoping for something else.

My son really enjoys this book. He is a beginning reader and really enjoys the short chapters followed by a visual puzzle or logical conclusion. The story is creative and interesting and I plan to buy more copies to gift to friends. Highly recommend.

In this book, Zuckert quotes and endorses Ronald Hamowy's "conjectural" definition of the pursuit of happiness in the Declaration of Independence, ignoring the actual May 1776 congressional definition of happiness ("internal peace, VIRTUE, and good order" -- written by John Adams and appearing in the resolution that established de facto independence). Zuckert finds it hard to believe that Burlamaqui stated that governments exist to secure natural rights, but BURLAMAQUI STATED EXACTLY THAT, with natural rights understood in terms of the pursuit of happiness, which is the grounding concept (mentioned in the first paragraph) of his "Principles of Natural and Politic Law." This willful blindness allows Zuckert to argue that Locke is the source of the ideas of the Declaration, while not engaging with the differing views of natural right that appear in Hutcheson and Burlamaqui, both of whom were well-known and well-respected in the era of the American Revolution. In other words, while the book's exposition of Lockean thought is well-written and accessible, the foundation of Zuckert's association of Locke with the Declaration of Independence is rotten.

Yet again, Michael Zuckert has produced a forceful, challenging, and overly fascinating work of scholarship. His previous work, "Natural Rights and the New Republicanism," in many ways a "prequel" to this volume, was a historical and not to mention philosophical landmark. This work picks up right where he left off. Part I of the work consists of an in depth analysis of the Declaration of Independence. This interpretration bristles with new insight. Unlike many past scholars, Zuckert makes an overt effort to place the Declaration in context. He does this by examining other sources of information, e.g. Thomas Jefferson's "Notes on Virginia" for instance. The end result, I must say, is brilliant. Contrary to modern conceptions, he demonstrates what the Declaration was really meant to say, and, at the same time, how philosophically sophisticated it really was. In Part II, Zuckert endeavors to prove that the United States was indeed founded as the natural rights republic, in a modern, dynamic, forward looking philosophical climate. To begin with, he picks apart the thesis that the American Revolution was merely an extension of the Glorious Revolution undertaken by the Whig ruling class in the late 1680s. This however, is nothing new, especially if one has already read his account of the Glorious Revolution and natural rights philosophy in his previous work. Nevertheless, he shows conclusively the incompatibility between the two Revolutions, primarily, but not wholly, through a comparison of the Declaration of Independence and the English "Bill of Rights." Moving on, Chapters 5 and 6 address the issue of Puritanism and its legacy in early America. Many scholars have proposed that the American Revolution was merely an extension of ideals held by the early Calvinist settlers of the 17th century. It is this thesis, however, that Zuckert completely demolishes. He conducts and in depth analysis of Puritan ideology, as well as its sources. Of particular interest is discussion of Martin Luther's concept of the "Two Kingdoms," and its influence in American thought. To make a long story short, he demonstrates how dramatically Locke's ideas clash with those of the early Puritans. This contention is driven home clearly by an examination of important political/relgious thinkers in 18th centiry New England, Elisha Williams and Jonathan Mayhew in particular. Finally, in Chapter 7 finds Zuckert further pushing his case for the natural rights republic. He takes on the so-called "classical republican" or "civic humanist" thesis expounded by such scholars as J.G.A. Pocock and Gordon Wood, deftly making mincemeat of them. Pressing on, he examines Thomas Jefferson's evolving political philosophy to reveal the truly radical, natural rightist foundations of American republicanism. Although the book is by and large solid, I do have several misgivings about it. First and foremost, Zuckert's Jefferson scholarship is highy suspect, as can be devined through use of Merill Peterson's biography, as the small, unscholarly Library of America collection of Jefferson's writings. I was very surprised that he did not cite Dumas Malone's definitive 6 volume biography "Jefferson and His Time," or Julian Boyd's definitive collection of Jefferson's papers. Also, Zuckert's refutation of the Puritan "Continuity Thesis," strikes me as a bit odd, as it does not prove anything at all concerning the colonies outside of New England, none of which have any Puritan heritage whatsoever. Despite these shortcomings, the work as a whole is brilliant. This volume, as well as his previous offering, is an absolute must for anyone interested in the relevant disciplines.

This book is an absolute must not only for loyal followers of a natural rights theory as basis of the US constitution. Every scholar who wants to research the foundations of American constitutionalism in depth should have this book in the personal library. It his here that he will find pure Lockeanism and is here that Zuckert puts forward his case of Lockean natural rights and social contract theory as ideological basis for the founders in such a concise way that it is difficult to argue against his case. Of course this is what avid Zuckert readers are used to. This book, however, in referring to Jefferson as a natural rights thinker argues the natural rights theory with one of the most convincing witnesses you can find in American history: Thomas Jefferson. Zuckert depicts the Declaration of Independence and American political thought from an interesting perspective, Jefferson's viewpoint. He succeeds in disputing the main opposing theories to the natural rights theory such as the exemplary role of classical Greece and Rome, the continuity theory based on Puritan thought and Bailyn's point that Locke was only one among others influential on American political thought, to name just a few. I did note, however, a certain tendency to neglect historical facts especially as far as the influence of the English common law and Whiggish thought on the framers is concerned. Finally, that Zuckert did not examine the Constitution itself as closely as the Declaration of Independence is not only excusable. It serves a good purpose: to underline the importance of the Declaration of Independence as an outflow of quintessential American thought, thus a document America should be proud of.
