Review

This debut novel is a story of loss, love, and friendship, about a teenager coming to terms with the past and dealing with repressed memories that are resurfacing...Readers will find Otis relatable and endearing in his first-person perspective of first love and heartbreak, as well as his unwavering loyalty to his friends. Meg and Dara round out a cast of well-developed characters who have extensive troubles of their own. Most teenagers will find a little bit of themselves in this well-executed work; a must-have for most YA collections.—School Library Journal (starred reviews)The inability to let go of the past pushes all three white teens beyond their comfort zones into uncharted territory, Garner slowly and steadily guiding readers through these journeys. A heavy read weighted by intense emotions and grief, the novel sifts through tough memories, searching for the silver lining.—Kirkus ReviewsOtis’ journey—as a competitive swimmer and as a grieving brother—is a poignant one...It’s tough-talking, reckless Dara who will intrigue readers. Her struggles with her father, her sexuality, and the dreams deferred because of her accident complement Otis’ story, elevating this to a narrative as much about human connection as it is about sports.—BooklistGarner’s debut sensitively portrays Meg and Otis’s bruised emotions, both recovering from deep loss. Though the description of Mason’s accident is a gut-punch in its realism, much of the plot unfolds predictably. The novel’s strongest moments go to Dara, whose no-holds-barred personality—“she was the human equivalent of a Venus flytrap”—livens and complicates the novel.—Publishers WeeklyOtis is a refreshingly authentic male protagonist who will win readers over . . . [A]n uplifting story about resilience and the power of relationships.—BookPageIn her debut novel, Garner examines the depths of loss and despair. Ultimately, Dara and Otis and Meg come to realize that hope, though fragile, is present in celebration of the simple things in life...the subtle and nuanced character development and the slow realization of how loss must be confronted create a believable and compelling read.—VOYALike most good summer reads, Phantom Limbs by Paula Garner is a delicious slow burn...Garner’s depiction of teenage sexuality is spot on, but even more so is the way she captures and crystallizes a very specific teenage experience.—Lambda LiteraryTragedy cuts deep, and every character in this book has scars—some terribly visible and others under the surface—but they are all beautiful. Paper Towns fans take note, this will be your new favorite book.—Shelf Awareness ProGarner does a fine job cultivating the book’s titular theme, with Dara’s phantom-limb pain, Otis’s grief-filled memories, and Meg’s PTSD...evoking in readers the acute ache of losing something, or someone, vital. As her debut powerfully mines the depths of such loss, it also charts the terrain of healing that follows, leaving readers with hope via Otis’s wise insights: “If something is unbearable, then how do you bear it? It’s an oxymoron. And yet…Somehow I was bearing it.”—Horn BookThe nuanced way that Garner deals with loss is not only beautifully done, but it’s thoughtful and insightful. Phantom Limbs is a quietly affecting, well-written gem of a book that will resonate with readers, long after the last page has been reached. A definite YA standout for 2016.—Romantic Times

GRADE: AThree years ago Otis's toddler brother died at the home of his next door neighbor/best friend/first love Meg. Shortly afterward, Meg's family moved cross country and he hasn't heard from her since, with the exception of Facebook stalking. Enter Dara, his self-appointed swim coach, who lost her arm in a shark attack. Her goal: make Otis an Olympian. Now Meg's coming back to town and about to turn Otis's world up, down and every which way.PHANTOM LIMBS tackles the experiences several characters enduring PTSD through the eyes on sixteen-year-old Otis. Every high school kid should have an Otis, a thoughtful friend who doesn't drink, will take the keys of partiers who do and will drop everything if needed. He's such a good guy. He's funny, smart. A poet who thinks about sex a LOT. Though at times in a politically incorrect manner, he's never disrespectful. He knows boundaries.Meg. Wounded, even more than Otis by the loss of his brother. She doesn't say enough or let Otis in.Dara, a hot mess, maddening but easy to understand why.Otis's parents are wonderfully flawed, especially his mother. But what mother wouldn't be, after losing a son in such a tragic manner.Debut writer Paula Garner gave Otis such a unique, ironic voice. His sense of humor, often warped, kept PHANTOM LIMBS from being a downer. At times I laughed and cried in the same paragraph. Garner is a guarantee preorder for me.THEMES: PTSD, grief, sexuality, LGBT, friendship, family, siblings, parents, loss, sports, swimmingPHANTOM LIMBS is one of the best books I've read about characters living with PTSD with a story that wasn't about PTSD or trauma.

Otis, Meg and Dara make up this absolutely lovely cast of characters in Garner’s touching debut novel. A story of loss, grief and life, there is something magical about this book.Otis. Sigh. What an absolutely charming young man. Garner beautifully captured the voice of a sixteen year old boy. He is wry, conflicted, painfully hurt, sensitive, very in tune with his emotions, yet he possesses a quiet strength. His brother Mason died in a tragic accident three years ago and nothing has been the same since. He lost his best friend Meg, right at the time the two thirteen year olds began to fall in love. His parents are irreparably damaged and just so broken. All he has left is Dara, his swimming coach with issues of her own.Dara lost part of her arm in a horrible accident, thus ending her hopes of being an Olympic swimmer. She’s angry, sarcastic, smart, flawed, brutally honest but above all she is real. Her friendship with Otis is one of the most poignant and gorgeous relationships I’ve ever witnessed. They just get each other in a way that no one else does. It truly touched me deep within my heart.Meg was Otis’ best friend and for a short while, his first love. Her and her family moved away after Mason died and the two never spoke again. But now, she’s coming back. What does this mean for Otis and Meg? How does Dara fit into all of this? This book deals with some heavy issues; figuring out how to deal with ones sexuality, death, divorce, and mainly, how to move on after such a devastating loss without forgetting about the past. Is it possible to move on and still have hope for the future?Even though the issues are heavy, Garner has a beautiful writing style. She truly captures all the feelings teenagers have; confusion, an overwhelming surge of hormones and new feelings, frustration, emotional upheaval. Her dialogue reads true and sounds like teenagers talking to each other, there is nothing false or stilted about it.I literally cannot say enough good things about this captivating book and about Garner as an author. I cannot wait to see more from her and I predict that this book will be huge. I know that I will hold these precious characters in my own heart for a very long time. So go, pre order your copy now.

Phantom Limbs is a wonderful novel that deals with love, loss, and letting go. Each character is beautifully written, and Garner allows them room to breathe and grow. The stakes aren't life-or-death high: it's more like a slice-of-life introspection that focuses much more on the people than the plot. I read through it one sitting, staying up waaaay past my bedtime because I wouldn't be satisfied until I knew everything. Meg could grate a little at times, and I thought that the very, very end (no spoilers) was not the editorial choice I would have made, but these are ultimately minor complaints that did not detract from my enjoyment of this book at all. Highly recommend! It's a nice breather from epic fantasy or action-adventure YA that reminds you that contemporary can be just as memorable, well-crafted, and haunting.

Love of words, turn of phrase, emotion delivered in black and white... Phantom Limbs. Paula Garner has written a story that will stay with you long after you read the last word. It's a story about people you know, maybe even you - to want when you shouldn't, grieve for you never had, and desire, need - long after the longing should be done, for love and things lost. Excellent.

Paula Garner did such an amazing job bringing the 16-year-old narrator known as Otis to life. The dialogue is also fabulous.

Great characters and story. Enjoyable read!

Awesome book for Y. A and adults

Such a beautiful story, and lovely writing. Definitely one of my top picks in YA for 2016. Every page had sentences that were so well crafted, I just wanted to read them again and again.
