The depth of reporting here is breathtaking. It's been out for decades, but I just read it and I have to say that it stands the test of time. It's a must-read of you have any interest in the business of Hollywood.
This is not really a tale of embezzlement and disgrace - it is the store of power struggles between the Board of Directors for Columbia Studios, who were clearly had personal loyalty in their underlings as their top priority, and the CEO, Alan Hirschfield, trying to do what he needed to do to save the studio.I don't have access to people at this level, so I appreciate the peeping-Tom aspect of viewing the thought processes and actions of people who normally hide behind lawyers, secretaries, and call-screeners.The author obviously interviewed many many people to put this book together, and I appreciate how he reported on the media coverage, as well. I never really thought of how people manipulate the news as part of the story, but course it is.The book is like a newspaper story in that it is filled with information, but the narrative reads like a novel - very easy to read. The author does a good job of developing story-lines, so we have a sense of completeness, and a sense of an overview, while also sprinkling the famous names and the glamour that makes Hollywood so compelling to people.I've never understood why Hollywood turns out bad movies month after month, year after year, when it is so easy to tell from the beginning that a movie is going to be awful. Why make awful movies?This book doesn't directly address that issue, but it shows how irresponsible and irrational the leading powers that control Hollywood on both coasts are, and how corrupt the whole system is. It's obvious that normal things like making a good product become irrelevent to their attention span.I guess it's not really corruption, if everyone knows it's happening, and it's just a way of getting things done.My only complaint is that I wish I had more of a reality on the Board Directors. Their actions seem so irrational, but I'm sure it's because they were not forthcoming in their interviews, and did not take the opportunity to express their points of view. People at that level are notorious for avoiding the press, so it is not surprising.
The best feature of this book -- which is somewhere in the gray area between non-fiction and fiction -- is its in-depth look at the relationship between Hollywood West (the studio system, in this case Columbia in its pre-Sony days) and Hollywood East, the NYC-centered management and financial centers that, in the case of each studio, hold ultimate authority and serve numerous behind-the-scenes financial and other functions. This relationship, here described in conditions of extreme tension, is tangentially mentioned in other books about Hollywood, Irene Mayer Sulzberger's autobiography being one of these sources. However, there are numerous downsides to this book, including the substantial time it will eat up as it parades through months of detail. Though based on extensive interviews, the author's decision to render, collate, and conflate hundreds of proffered details (all subject to recall and often likely self-serving tendentious purposes) into quotes is highly dubious, to say the least. On the up side, however, the author makes a decent attempt at analyzing the bigger picture at several points in the book. So, take it with many grains of salt, but this may be the closest we're able to come to understanding a very complex system. Before you spend countless hours reading this book, and hate yourself afterwards, please read the ultimate denouement, the same author's November 1995 "Vanity Fair" article ("Final Exposure") on Begelman's suicide that year after almost another two decades of living in the Hollywood shadows, including numerous other creative "financial irregularities."
Over twenty years after its original publication, this book is still a compelling page turner that I could not put down. Actor Cliff Robertson unwittingly uncovers an embezzler, which ultimately fuels massive incompetence and repeated mistakes that almost destroy Columbia Pictures. While we are now lamenting the greed, corruption, and incompetence that lead to our current financial crisis, it's interesting to note that Wall Street has always suffered from foolishness. A very well written book.
One of two great books on the inner workings of Hollywood (the other being Julie Saloman's "The Devil's Candy," about the tribulations of turning Tom Wolfe's "The Bonfire of the Vanities" into a movie).
Terrific story of a mixture of the entertainment business in Hollywood in the corporate world New York City. Really had far reaching implications in both worlds. Enjoyed it thoroughly.
Indecent Exposure is captivating, reads like a who dunnit. A real page turner.
I have always liked Cliff Robertson and the movies he chooses to be in. This non-fiction book met my expectations in every way.
