The University Physics book has the distinction from the College physics series to be complicated by calculus. This isn't the case. Calculus is a prominent topic when one studies kinematics and from then on, calculus isn't really a big deal. This book is the biggest book I have, for the simple fact, that there is an immense amount of material and also because they really take up a lot of space to discuss ideas. The highlight of this book is the modern physics portion, in which quantum mechanics, atomic physics, particle physics, relativity and cosmology is discussed. To me, the weakness of this book is fluid mechanics. However, there is quite enough on fluids if you want to take the MCAT, for example. There are a rich variety of problems that, when solved, allow you to pick up on certain tricks and learn different tools for attacking problems. Therefore, it is advised to pick up the solutions manual if you can. This is the only book I have in which the problem sets are just as valuable as the text.

The book is extremely well done, and this being the 12th edition this should be no surprise. The explanations of the concepts are good enough, but the real strengths of the book lie in the well-done figures, in the generous number of thoroughly explained numerical examples, and in the well thought-out problem sets at the end of each chapter. If you use this book along with the Schaum's Outline of College Physics you should have as easy a time as is possible with the subject matter.Now for what is not so good, which lies entirely in the cynical marketing strategy. I have compared the 12th edition to the 11th, and I cannot find one additional subject or chapter or even one that has been deleted. The two books seem to have identical subject matter, and that is saying quite a bit for two 1700 plus page textbooks that are supposed to be different editions. So what is different? From the publisher's own information, the difference seems to be in revised exercises, revised drawings, added sketches to worked examples, added goals at the beginning of each chapter, and other such minutia. Hardly the stuff that new editions should be made of considering the price tag. The final ploy, just to insure that the poor students are "locked into" buying a new book is the concept of the student access kit that comes with each book and acts as a personal tutor to the student. But here's the catch - once one student has opened it and used it, it is useless to any other student. So much for reselling your textbook at the end of the semester. Normally I would take off at least two stars for such blatant highway robbery, but the book is so artfully done I just can't find it in myself to do so. teaches basic and advanced physics well, but does not prepare you well enough for the "Problems" or "Challeng Problems" in the back of each chapter. The section chapters problems are what the book prepares you for, so be prepared to do some extra studying in order to understand how to solve the problem.

Young and Freedman's is much better than Halliday's. While Halliday's are problem oriented approach which teaches concepts through problems solving. Serway's is similar to Young and Freedman and explains concepts well, but it doesn't have as many difficult problems as YF. I read both the 11th and 12th Edition. They have basically the same content. Even the 9th Edition doesn't differ much from this new freshly out of oven book. Problem arrangement is pretty much the same for all the edition with some additional problems and slightly modified arrangement. I bought the older 9th edition for my class this past semester. It went well. Our problem assignments are not from the textbook. Moreover, the library has a reserved copy. I used that for reference to the textbook problems.

This is actually a pretty good physics book if you're just starting out. It has a ton of material and it goes fairly in-depth with most of the topics. My professor wasn't very good, and i so i was glad i was able to learn from the book alone. The practice problems are extremely useful and i really liked how they showed how to work them out in the textbook rather than trying to sell a separate solutions manual like so many publishers do. It's a good book and nice introduction to physics.

I am very happy with this textbook.The set up and flow of each chapter is pretty much what I would hope for. Explanations range from adequate to excellent. The diagrams and graphics are very good and clear - excellent help for visualizing what is going on. My favorite part: the chapter summaries include distilled, categorized recaps of the mathematical relationships introduced during the chapter. Chapter reviews that are excellent for reviewing the chapter.The one thing I find myself not loving is how often examples and chapter questions require the reader to flip pages back & forth, referring the reader back to a previous example, sometimes in a previous chapter, in order to obtain the given information and/or picture required for the current example/question. In all fairness, I can understand why the author did it. The book is already mammoth. I just prefer examples & questions to be self-contained, is all. A minor nuisance: not enough for me to downrate the book.(The solutions manuals are an entirely different story, but-)This textbook is outstanding.

The pacing of this book is really nice. It eases you into it and gets you in the rhythm of learning the coding process before it jumps up in difficulty. Saying "one hour a day" is a bit misleading, but no more so than diet books claiming to have you lose 30lbs in 30 days. You'll have to put the work in, but I've looked around for a lot of different C++ books and this is a great one to learn from

My 12 year old Daughter is using this book to learn C++. She likes it very much, but breaks the learning into smaller chunks than one hour per day. The only downside is that the book is so concise that she never comes to her Dad for C++ questions.

I bought this book to help my son out with a programming class. The lessons seem to be ok. My main complaint is the book completely ignores the Macintosh in the setup of an IDE or compiler. The author couldn't even be bothered to insert one paragraph to tell Mac users to download Xcode or follow the same instructions as Linux users. Yeah, Mac OS and Linux are very similar under the hood, since Mac OS is based on UNIX. But the author doesn't even mention it. Very disappointing to have a computer book that ignores one entire computer platform.

First C++ book that I am reading that is not so cryptic. Author explains the "whys" of some programming issues that other authors don't even address. I am half way through, and I am understanding more from this book than when I took C++ as a college course. Good job, Mr. Rao.

This book is a wonder as a child who only did basic python programming before this I understood everything the book had to offer. While if you are someone who has trouble finding time to sit down or has all summer but just cant pay attention this book is not for you. It does not do a good job of keeping you attention like some other books do. For me, though, this book was a perfect fit and I enjoy the language.P.S. : C++ is not a suitable first language to learn as it is one of the harder ones. I recommend javascript and python to get started I chose python and used a colorful book called Python for Kids. It is published by No-Startch-Press and they have books on many other high level programming languages including javascript.Edit: The name associated with this account did not write the review her son did.

It's very informative. I like it more when texts have a boldface definition describing and defining things. I was required to read 5 chapters a week, so not an easy read. Also, the author likes to use five dollar words where they do not need to be and also at times , are incorrect.

The Handbook of Dispute Resolution is a product of the Program on Negotiation [PON]at the Harvard Law School. It is a 520 page academic compendium of short articles on a wide range of aspects of negotiation and dispute resolution. It is not so much a handbook as it is a scholarly survey of articles on aspects of dispute resolution such as: personality, emotion, gender, culture, main types of ADR procedures, on-line dispute resolution, etc.It should be read by those looking for a broad view of the dispute resolution field. Short chapters make for sustained progress through this tome.

Needed this for a class and still using in my education and will continue using it.

I have read just about every Lupus book out there--from memoir to treatise, from books aimed at neophytes to those targeted at the experienced patient. At this point I could probably write one of my own. But I keep reading rather compulsively, hoping to learn something new that will prove helpful. Usually this task proves rather Sisyphean.But I struck gold when I read this book, far and away the most lucid treatment of the disease I have ever read. Anyone who has Lupus should read it, highlighting it as I did on my Kindle. Anyone who cares for, lives with, or loves someone with Lupus should read it. And (unlike other Lupus books) anyone who treats Lupus patients--as a physician or nurse--should also read it. It is jam-packed with tons and tons of very helpful advice and medical information.However, if you do not have any biology background (as I do) you may find certain portions of the book a bit hard to understand. Just skip them. They are not important anyway. The advice sections, which are extensive beyond belief, do not require any knowledge of science and are very clearly written. I do like that Dr. Thomas has not watered down his book as other physicians do, and that he assumes that Lupus patients can choose to read those sections or not.I hope he realizes that by writing this volume, he will empower the Lupus community (which is huge). Armed with an extraordinary amount of his medical advice--some of it granular and some, not--patients can go to their physicians to ask for critical lab tests and game changing medications. Many Lupus patients are not fortunate enough to have access to quality medical care, for one reason or another. This book may further propel them to be their own medical advocates, and substantially improve their health. It is a must-read.

Fabulous book. Very informative, but still readable. Author explains very complex medical information in understandable ways. Lupus is a very illusive, and misunderstood disease, even by most doctors. My wife was finally diagnosed properly 12 years ago, and has received excellent care from a rheumatology specialist who has greatly improved the quality of her life. Unfortunately, she went for another 15 years to doctors who did not recognize her symptoms, and diagnosed her with pretty much everything but Lupus. I wish we would have had a resource like this back then. Become informed, and seek out specialists who undersatnd Lupus and are up to date on state of the art treatments. After reading this book you will know more about Lupus than most of the doctors you see. We had two different doctors tell my wife that she was just depressed, and needed to get out in the sun more - Well, with Lupus, that is the worst thing you can do. Bottom line, educate yourself, and shop wisely for medical care, and this disease can be successfully managed.

I was recently diagnosed with lupus. I had read many books and research papers before getting to The Lupus Encyclopedia. It is my number one 'go-to' resource for my disease. Dr. Thomas has put together a clear, but not dumbed down, resource about lupus and what you need to do to manage it as well as communicate well with your health team. He is up to date with the most current information about treatments and recent new understandings about how the disease works. It's great having it all in one place. I would recommend this book to any one who has the disease or has a loved one with it. Lupus takes a lot of management and understanding the trade off of the decisions you have to make. This is the only book that has actually helped me become a better member of my health team.

AWESOME, AWESOME BOOK!!! My husband and I each have our own bookmarks init as he reads anything that I put in front of him that has to do with my illnesses, medicines and treatments...I am straddling @ 35 meds/day and 10 auto-immune disorders. I also just ordered this book today for my Parents. EVERYONE with Lupus or any of the other many associated auto immune diseases / disorders should have to read and use as a reference. I brought into my Rheumatologist's when I went in for my Rituxan treatment. They LOVED it and were going to order 1 or 2 to have onsite for patients to use / read while they where there getting any of their numerous treatments. Also, this book is VERY inexpensive for being a 900 page book...unbelievable! I pre-ordered mine in February 2014 and finally received in June 2014...WELL WORTH THE WAIT!!!!!

Having recently been diagnosed with Lupus I needed a resource to help me better understand my condition. This book is filled with information for anyone suffering with Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Hoshimoto's, and various other autoimmune disorders. I love how the author explained the medical side of an autoimmune disease for the lay person to understand. It is very well written and easy to understand. I love the different chapters on medications used to treat lupus, their side effects, as well as their benefits. This is a wonderful book.
